Hi Folks, I was wondering how many folks are pursuing new contemporary songs for their uke playing. I have been doing a lot of searching and experimenting with play everything from goo goo dolls, IZ, sting, jet, jason mraz, cranberries, flamenco style, lyle Lovett, etc. Been playing just about four months, and loving it. Never played other instruments...the uke is so versitle. Issues I find are, well, finding just guitar lyric/chord examples for the most part. Been finding most music on: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com http://kaizenbiz.com/jush/guitarchords/index.html http://www.ultimate-guitar.com Appreciate any feedback and other resources. Mark

Hi Mark, You're right about the uke being versatile. Pretty much any style of music can be played on it and I'm sure there are a lot of people playing different styles. However, since the uke is not that popular with the general public there is not a lot of material as far as arrangements specifically written for uke. Your best best is probably to get guitar arrangements that you can find and modify them so they're playable on the uke. Another good source for more modern music for guitar is OLGA (the On-Line Guitar Archive), which is the oldest source of guitar tabs on the Internet. Here's their address: http://www.olga.net/ You'll notice that on ezFolk I try to just stick with music that is in the public domain, which would be songs published before 1923. That's not too big a deal for me since I'm interested in old folk songs anyway. I realize that's not what a lot of people want, and if there were no legal considerations I would have long ago loaded the website with music from Bob Dylan, John Prine, and dozens of other modern artists whose music I like and who are more popular with the general public. If you follow the link to OLGA above take a look at their "About" page, which provides some interesting info about how their money from sales on their website goes to their legal fund. There are some sites where you can still find tabs and lyrics. I've been amazed for years that the Cowpie Bunkhouse has provided thousands of country music tabs, lyrics, and chords with apparently no trouble at all. Other sites get around the copyright laws by doing business in other countries. The website you mentioned above -- http://www.ultimate-guitar.com -- has the following person listed as the owner: Contact Info for ultimate-guitar.com: Naidenov, Evgenii Kaliningrad KaliningradRUSSIAN FEDERATION I looked at the site and my guess is that Mr. Naidenov doesn't really have a lot to do with it, but in order to get around the copyright issues the real owners (most likely American) are able to somehow do their business through a Russian ISP in order to get around the copyright issues. Anyhoo, that's a bit off the topic but it explains a little bit of why it's hard to find a lot of tabs (guitar, uke, or whatever) for modern music that is copyright protected. Having said all that though, the very best way for the general musician to learn to play anything he wants to play is to learn how to play and arrange things yourself, then apply those techniques to songs you like. It's all music and for the most part once you know how to play you can choose any songs you like and play them. Good luck...
