This: http://cgi.ebay.com/Johnson-Baritone-Ukulele-with-Dean-Markley-pickup_W0QQitemZ7417724909QQcategoryZ16224QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem -is the second time this week I've seen nylon strings teamed up with a magnetic pickup. Is there some new magnetized nylon string on the market, or something? I'm confused. Mike B

What I think you are seeing is a piezo-electric pickup, which picks up the vibrations like a mic. These aren't the "electric" pickups like an electric guitar (or banjo, in Dean's case). Personally, they aren't in my bag for any acoustic instrument.

If you think about it, most guitarists who use nylon strngs professionally don't use a pick up at all. They rely on external mikes. The classical, flamenco and even guys like Charlie Bird, the jazz guitar master of the bossa nova would just about always play to a cardiod mike or two aimed at the sound hole.

You can't beat a god clean mic, if you're in a quiet setting. I play in a little trio, and we play some noisy gigs. I've been using a Gibson Chet Atkins nylon string solid body. Not perfect, but it sounds pretty sweet thru a good amp. Mb Last edited on Wed May 24th, 2006 06:50 pm by Mike Bagneski |

I've played acoustic guitars in noisy rooms working through mikes and PA and it suffices well. If the room is really loud placing the mikes a little closer to the sound hole will help. The cartioid sensitivity pattern will let you move around a bit as you play. You can always fire a shotgun into the ceiling to hush down the crowd. Works for me.

'Course, if you play 5-string banjo, there ain't no problems being heard! The main problem is that the room tends to empty pretty quick.

Brad is actually correct. I did an open mike recently playing banjo. It was a crowded room. Thee was a mike for the mandolin picker who sang, a line for his instrument, a line for the guy playing rythem guitar. No line's left over for me... and no more mikes either. No matter. The banjo (and it's just an open back instrument) held it's own. The owner of the place's dog fainted.

A piezo is a direct-contact device. To answer Mike, it does look like bunk to me. To the best of my knowledge, the Dean Markley is a magnetic pickup. A strong clue is that the name of the ONLY series they make that look like that is called "ProMag". Probably the first two strings on the bari are metal wound, which means the pickup might pick up a little sound from those strings. Damn...wish I had my Markley here to try it out, but when I got my Baggs, I gave it to my sis so she could play amplified for her congregation... Okay, here's the other one (NOT a UKE, so sorry for the OT): http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC-NYLON-F-HOLE-FRETLESS-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ7418361512QQcategoryZ47064QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem One of the bullets reads: SINGLE DOUBLE HUMBUCKER PICK UP CHROME PLATED COVER. That is really intriguing! "For the Intermediate to Advanced player" "Smooth-neck fretless." "Nylon string f-hole guitar." It has so much going for it! I wonder if they throw in a "nylon-string steel." Maybe that pick-up works off of the vibration of the top.
