i want to qualify my statement avbout "other than martin and gibson". a couple of hawaiian ukulele factories turn out great instruments -- KoAloha and Kamaka.

the KoAloha Pineapple Sundae is going to increase invalue the way the early decal Kamaka pineapples have, imo. from the few i've played KoAloha's craftsmanship and quality control are first rate.

What lucky uke player has played a Vintage 5K and has compared/will compare that experience to playing a new 5K?  What was/will be the outcome?  No brainer?

I just played the new 5K at Tall Toad in Petaluma.  I sounds wonderful, very sweet , excellent intonation, even tone on the mellow/bright side.  The tuners feel great and of course it looks great.

So I went home and played my vintage 5k to see how they compare.  It's like playing an entirely different instrument.  The vintage 5k has a very deep dark tone to it.  It sounds like it's resonance is very close to the C note so it's a bit boomy.  I am using the black Kamaka strings and the new 5K has clear strings, so this may be a minor factor.

The vintage 5k of course is very old.  The frets are a little uneven (actually the 12 fret is very high) and I'm not sure the intonation is as good as the new one.  For these reasons I don't play it very often.

If you can afford the new 5k I think you would enjoy playing it.  As others have commented there are many many really excellent ukuleles available today.  They each have very different sounds and feel so take your time and pick the one that really turns you on.
