Risa, you've all seen better pics on Elderly, but I thought I'd give one with a photo of the sax strap I use instead of the strap button over the shoulder type. This works much better for me.![]()

This is my custom LoPrinzi soprano which is a much better instrument than I will ever deserve! It was a (very) surprise birthday gift from Hubby and sons--given only three months after I became entranced with ukuleles on a visit to Hawaii. Pix isn't real sharp but details are: spruce top, mahogany back and sides, white binding, red wood trim around the soundhole with blue/black/white purfling--and a voice that's sweet and loud.![]()

Family of Harmony ukes:![]() So far my "holy grail" uke--that is, the UkeBrand that sounds better than any damn Martin (and I'm sticking to that!!!) (well, I'm saying that because I don't have a Martin...jealousy, yes...) ![]() More to come...as soon as the e-bay delivery man comes. OK, lemme give you a hint...Roy Smeck spruce top, Silvertone mahogany sunburst, and a Frye "made out of an old mansion door" ukulele. Y'all know what a Lanikai CK-TEQ and a concert Bushman Jenny look like, so I'll spare ya the grief! Last edited on Sun Feb 26th, 2006 08:13 am by UkeForever |

Okay friends, let me try (again and again): First cent: Banjo made in St.-Eustatius by the man who plays the tenor (pickin’) banjo in the traditional stringband there. From Holland I brought the tuners and frets (too big, I was such an ignorant before I found this site). The neck and drum he cut from a mountain tree. The skin is sheep. I begged him not to use the traditional cat or monkey, it was supposed to be goat but then his friend was butchering a sheep and gave him the skin. He sanded it thin but the sheep doesn’t like his new destiny it seems, the skin sinks down often. The red nut is a tooth of a comb. The metal ring is to make it loud. The black piece of bicycle tyre was added by me, to get rid of resonances. In vain. This type of banjo is played in the whole region. Metal strings. Big pick, usually cut from a chlorox bottle. D-tuning. D’s their key, only rarely A. It is a chopping instrument and mainly played with open chords. Often these banjo’s have even less frets, since they don’t play high up the neck anyway. This instrument is not about melody but about rythm. The music is calypso. And Christmas songs soaked in calypso. In the Christmas night musicians and singers go out caroling and serenading all night, till way into the Christmas morning. Five times I went with them. You go on people’s porch, sing and play, the people wake up, come out in their nightwear, give drinks and/or money. I went with them as a photograper, wasn’t good enough yet to play along with them. But twice they used this banjo. Last time: this Christmas. From midnight till ten in the morning. ![]() ![]() ![]() To give you an idea of the seize... ![]() Second cent: my Richwood soprano ![]() And finally a pic of the Chrismas night 2003, with the banjo in full swing ![]() BTW, I'm NOT in this picture, I'm holding the camera. One of these days I'll make their MP3-page for you to hear their music. Neal, thanks for the help! Greetings, Jeanette Last edited on Mon Feb 27th, 2006 07:42 pm by jeanadriane |

My small but growing family of ukulele and uke-wannabes a Vineyard tenor necked soprano, a Kolohe concert, a Vineyard tenor, and a no name banjo uke in the foreground. Behind it all is a 1920's Vega Whyte Laydie tenor that I have tuned re-entrant as play as a baritone uke. Attachment: a1.JPG (Downloaded 137 times)

I wholeheartedly welcome the newest addition to my ukulele family: A Roy Smeck Concert uke (really a soprano), like the one seen at the top of the Flea Market Music Page. Wasn't it Hannibal L. who said "We covet what we see every day"?![]() I have wanted a spruce-topped uke for awhile, and this satisfies! Guess I'll have to postpone the Risa or a DaSilva...until the summer... Question for Beeconk: how's that Vineyard tenor? Last edited on Tue Feb 28th, 2006 05:35 am by UkeForever |

Nice looking uke Uke - The Vineyard? so far so good - although I still want different strings. I'd answer your question more in depth here but I've already written quite a bit on it on another thread http://www.ezfolk.com/forums/forum19/1557.html
