Hey i'm new at this I read through a lot of the other topics already but I wanted to know:

1. If i tune my tenor ukulele to a low G tuning can i use the same chord shapes as if i was tuning it for a high G?

2. Is there a way to tune the tenor lower or closer to the baritone without stressing out the neck or is the closest to say a guitar tuning the low G that I'm gonna get?

3. Does anyone know of any sources for tenor uke Bar chords or do I just make them up based on the chord shapes that already exist?

thats it... thanks!

1. Yes
2. There are G sets (DGBE) (baritone tuning) for tenors. Aquila makes them I think (maybe others as well)
3. I guess trial and error is the easiest way. But you could also try this site: http://www.sheep-entertainment.nl/ukulele/index.html

1.  Most of the chord shapes will be the same.

2.  Tuning lower from GCEA tenor to baritone DGBE tuning will require thicker diameter strings made for that purpose; simply slackening a set of tenor strings down to DGBE will leave the strings too loose, without enough tension to give you good tone.

3.  I don't know of any charts or books that show barre chords, but you can probably try using simple chord shapes for creating major, minor, and 7th chords.

Thanks for the link hrlarson. I'll have a look at it. I'm gonna try the low g tuning first and then maybe the baritone after. the low g just seems a little more common for now..

Thanks for your help!!

I think relatively tiny instruments like ukulele sounds better with a brighter tone. That's why I tune my soprano i D. I would probably tune a tenor in C (with a low G, I guess). I haven't tried a lot of baritones (only Bushman and Brüko/Brueko), but I think DGBE (or rather EADGBE) sound so much better on the guitar.

Holy moly guys, I just realised that the Aquilla strings are made of ACTUAL animal gut and quite frankly that disgusts me.

To each their own I guess but I try not to buy leather clothes or even wool. I'm not a vegetarian but I try to limit my meat consumption so I can in No way actually use those strings haha.

Back to the drawing board I guess. All I can get here are D'arddario strings and the way they are labeled confuses the heck outta me haha.

That's not correct; Aquila Nylgut is a completely synthetic (no animal by-products) polymer.  The name is meant to combine the best qualities of nylon (physical stability and longevity) and gut (sweeter tone) strings.

If you can't find Aquila Nylgut strings at local music stores, Elderly Instruments

http://elderly.com/accessories/cats/STUK.html

and Just Strings carry them:

Aquila do make gut strings as well, but that's not what you'll get unless you ask for it. If that disgusts you, I'd say go for Worth. D'Arrio's ukulele strings make your uke sond like a toy. I haven't tried Martin ukulele strings, but they've got a real bad reputation. Worth are softer than Aquilas and sound "thinner".

Thanks everyone. I dont meant to offend anyone when I say it disgusts me. I understand that animals have been used as tools for many years and i'm not about to argue it... just personal preference you know?

I just was on the aquilla website and they show you how they make them and so i assumed all of their strings were made like that.

My uke does sound like a toy, cause I have no idea what I'm doing haha. And the D'arrio are the only ones I can seem to find in this one man ukulele town.

thanks for all the help guys! You all seem to know a lot about it!!
