Hi everyone. First post here. I have been playing guitar for about a year and a half and am thinking of buying a Ukelele . I know the tuning is different obviously. I have a couple questions. 1. I am considering buying a Lanikai LU-21T to start with. I prefer the larger size. I might consider the LU-21C concert even tho it is a bit smaller. Are these good ones to start off with? I don't want to go over $100 to start with as I want the Uke basically for my office and travel. I don't like the idea of traveling with one of guitars. Is there another make and model I should consider? 2. What is this about high G and Low G strings? Which should I go with if I buy some Aquila strings? Thanks +Mark Last edited on Thu Jun 4th, 2009 08:06 pm by bshpmark ____________________ Larrivee D03 Larrivee OM-03MT Alvarez AD80SSB Alvarez RD20S12 Alvarez AJ60S12 Yamaha FG730S Yamaha FS720S Kala KA-S Uke |

Why not buy the baritone uke? Tuned like the guitar, uses same chords, and easier to play.

Well, I was in a local music store today and found a Kala KA-S soprano uke that the fellow cut me very good deal on the price. So, for what I got it for I figured it was a cheap way to learn. What strings are recommended to replace the GHS strings? I lowered the action a bit on it.

The popular consensus seems to be Aquila Nylgut strings. You can find them at http://www.juststrings.com and other online places if you (like me)can't find them locally.

Thanks for the info on Aguila. I had looked at them a little earlier on that website and was trying to figure out which ones to order. I am assuming the standard size in C. Is that correct?

Yes, that's correct. That will give you the high G, low C and the rest. http://www.juststrings.com/aqu-asrc.html

Normally I would say go with the concert because I think it sounds more like a ukulele to me and is usually cheaper. But nothing sounds more like a ukulele that a soprano and if you already have one maybe you should try the tenor. In my opinion a tenor sounds more guitaree to me than a concert. But don't get the impression a tenor sounds anything like a guitar. Am I making any sense?

I believe Low or High G depends on the music you like to play and how much bass you like in your music. High G for traditional Hawaiian and standard classics. It has that classic distinctive ukulele sound especially on a soprano. It is recommended not to use low G on a soprano or concert. Low G is usually on tenors. I use low G to play newer Hawaiian or Jahwaiian songs. Reggae chunking needs more bass for Bob Marley. Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson (lots of chunking) and Iz Kamakawiwo'ole music definitely low G tenor. Does your songs need more bass? Low GCEA is the DGBE strings capoed on the fifth fret of your guitar.

You have a soprano, good choice. Stick with re-entrant, which is high G. Coming from guitar, I'd say go with Aquila, the feel will be more familiar. The uke will make you a better guitar player. Learn all the chords, shapes, and a few songs. You'll notice a familiar pattern, and some chords you probably would never do on the guitar. Then you will do them, and slap yourself in the head.. It's a wonderful instrument for anyone. http://www.sheep-entertainment.nl/ukulele/index.html Download the app and have fun. Don't forget to read the instructions, the tuning is set to D (adf#b) so you'll have to click C (gcea)
