hi, its been 3 weeks since i started to play the ukulele.i have problems with my finger joints. its diff to straighten then, e.g. i cannot make a bridge to play pool or snooker. i can strum down with my thumb and it sounds OK. but when i use my index finger it just sounds muffled with no clear sounds coming from each string. when i use the soft pleck i get pleasant notes out of every string i strum. ideally i like to just use my fingers when i do on the up stroke i hit some strings get caught on some strings that end up sounding louder then the rest. am not sure whether to just carry on with the pleck and continue learning the chords with my left hand. maybe in months to come i can try without the pleck again. any thoughts out there you care to share? thanks Steve

Go ahead and use the plectrum. I use one most the time (a rubber "wedgie") and fingerpick and strum some times too, but who cares what you use? Just use what allows you to enjoy playing, and don't worry about what others do  Just like guitar; some folks use a flat pick, some use picks on several fingers and thumb, some use a flat pick and fingers, some use only fingers, and some use only the thumb. No rules, just preferences! Hope your fingers get better soon too. But just enjoy!

Thanks for your helpful advice. ive read so many book and 99% of them talk about playing with the fingers and dont mention the pleck. i will go ahead and just enjoy myself and not restict myself by thinking playing has to be done in a certain way. thanks for replying. steve
