Hi, I just brought home a soprano Lanikai LU-21 with Aquila strings because I have been playing my 40 year old Martin soprano so much and putting a few small marks on it. I am on fire with the ukulele in the past 4 months and have learned heaps. But I have had it for over a week now and I tune at least once every time I play it, which is 2 -3 times a day. It always is a bit out of tune. The screws are very firm on the back. Is this what I should expect?

New nylon or Aquila Nylgut strings will always require some time to fully stretch out and stabilize their tuning; sometimes this takes over a week (I have an 8-string Lanikai tenor and the octave high-C string took that long to stabilize and stay in tune).  Assuming that the tuning machine set screws on your uke are tight, another factor is that you are playing the uke very often while the strings are stilll breaking in.

Aquila recommends a string-stretching technique prior to installing them; this is said to dramatically reduce the break-in period.

Sadly, Aquila strings are also highly susceptible to temperature changes. So if you're going from hot to cool, the chances are you'll have to retune often.

They sound and look great, but there are some disadvantages.

Thanks, I guess I will have to wait longer then or perhaps this uke just won't stay in tune very well. I hope not. I have been spoiled by the Martin which stays in tune quite a while. Cheers, Jinni
