Hi everyone,

This is y first post so first thing is to say hello. Also thanks in advance for your help.
I am getting closer to making my first uke buy and trying to get it right!. I am mostly a guitar player.

I am located in the UK so it's the best I could find around on my price range (100-150 pounds).

Both of them have EQ but I just dont really understand the diference. I saw the Lanikai LU21TE at the shop and it uses a 9 volt battery that goes just where the volume/balance switches are. Can't figure it out on the ashbury:

Ashbury

Lanikai
http://folk-instruments.musiciansfriend.com/product/Lanikai-LU21TE-Tenor-Ukulele-AcousticElectric?sku=512524

In terms of price I can get:
Lanikai = 120
Ashbury = 166 / with gig bag (seems to be a good deal)

Would the price diference be worth it?
Is this kind of wood KOA so much better?
Anyone here with this Ashbury?

All help would be apreciated.

Thanks,
Cris

At those prices, both of those ukes have laminated wood construction; the Lanikai is made of laminated nato and the Ashbury is laminated koa.  Real koa wood is rare because it only grows in Hawaii - a solid koa uke would cost at least $500 US.

For about the same price as the Ashbury ($169.95 US), you could get a better instrument from Lanikai - the ST-EQ, solid spruce top tenor cutaway acoustic-electric uke:

Hi Will,

Thanks for your reply but I am not able to get that model in the UK, I've seen you had recommended in another thread. Buying from the USA ATM is not an option since it's the same price or more expensive in many cases. (after VAT, TAX, and SHIPPING).

So that's why I am looking at this 2. Which one would you pick?

Also what is the difference in the Electronics,or is it basically the same system?

Cheers,
Cris

Hi Dromi, Will,  I check out the UK sites occasionally for ukes not available on this side of the sea, and find interesting buys from time to time.

Clearwater makes Ohana style ukes (the same instruments I'm sure), and for a time I saw the Clearwater "Vita" ukes selling for a good price.   Do a search for them.

I think the RUMC are a good source.  Check out this bargain for 80 GBP with soild spruce soundboard:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-CLEARWATER-ROUNDBACK-ELECTRO-CONCERT-UKULELE-ucw7r_W0QQitemZ250396672123QQihZ015QQcategoryZ16224QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262?_trksid=p1713.m153.l1262

If you're not keen on the plastic roundback (I've got an Ovation Applause in my herd and like it), consider this for 155 GBP:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-CLEARWATER-CONCERT-ELECTRIC-UKULELE-ROSEWOOD-ucwrc_W0QQitemZ250392743535QQihZ015QQcategoryZ16224QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262?_trksid=p1713.m153.l1262

Solid rosewood.  Wow, I wish I could get one of those.  It looks so cool too.

Hope this helps a bit.

edit: yeah, I like both of these and they both seem like real deals.  The roundback has just a straight plug but I've got a uke like this and like the simplicity of it since I rarely plug it in and don't have to contend with knobs.  I really like the control knobs on the front of the rosewood concert.  I'm not keen on the looks of the slide panels on the side, and the fancy EQ electronics are probably dubious unless you're getting pricey anyway.  I think a single volume and tone knob is all you need and whether it's on the uke or the amp is just a matter of preference and convenience.  I run everything through a volume foot pedal anyway and don't fuss much with tone.

Hi Sano,

Thanks for your input I had a look at this shop before. The thing is, I am certain I want a tenor. I tried a concert for a couple of days and didn't really like the size.

Cheers anyway, if you think of any other option please let me know.

Cris

Man you're fast!  I was just noticing the same, that you're shopping for a tenor.  There's a tenor version of the Clearwater rosewood from RUMC too.   I've got all the sizes and like them all.  I've got a Hamano soprano that's every bit as loud as my Kala tenor.  But it's all about what feels right, eh.

edit:  hey, get this: the tenor rosewood's the same price.

I just noticed that these are solidbody but still with nylon strings.  Could be very interesting, perhaps not as a first uke but maybe a second or third...

Hi Sano,

Yea I more after a classic uke at least as my first one. I have an electric guitar already!

I think I am closing on the UL21TE for the price mostly.
It's got shadow pickups not sure how good they are.

Here are some closeups:

thanks,
Cris
