Hi, I am a clawhammer banjo player and am thinking about getting a uke to play clawhammer. I was wondering what would be the best type for that, maybe tenor or a banjo uke? No one sells or plays ukes where I live, so I can't try them out.

I am also curious if a uke will have enough volume to carry in a band situation. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi RJ,

I'd steer clear of the banjo ukes for clawhammer. Maybe it's just me but every one I've tried to play clawhammer style sounded awful. The wooden ones sound much better to me. I also prefer the smaller ones (soprano or concert) to the larger ones (tenor or baritone) as they seem to give you more volume with the higher pitch. The Fluke ukes sound good played clawhammer style and have a lot of volume (for ukes).

I think the only way you'll get enough volume in a band setting would be to amplify the sound. The nylon strings on ukes are just too quiet to compete with steel-stringed instruments in loudness.

Thanks Richard,

Maybe I'll give the Fluke a try.

I have only learnt to play a little clawhammer but after trying it on quite a few ukes I have found that it sounds best (and loudest) on my soprano akulele.  Here's a link to a youtube video for an idea of the sound:

Hope this may give you another option to think about.
