I currently have one of those crappy Mahalo Ukes that I got on a whim a few years ago for $20. I got my moneys worth out of that thing for sure, but I think it's time for an upgrade. Anyway, I'm looking to buy a tenor ukulele. I'm going for the tenor since I'm interested in the slightly larger size and the low g. My upper price limit is $200, but something closer to $100 would be preferable. I'm not looking for absolute perfection, I'm just looking for something that sounds good at that price range. Two ukes I've had an eye on are the Lanikai LU-21T ("nato" wood) and the Makala MK-T .Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Best? 100? Take your pick, in the price range you're at, the Lanikai or the Makala are a choice, and you won't find much difference untill you pace yourself up a few more dollars. At that level, they're all pretty much the same. I see you play banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, etc.. what makes you think that quality wise a uke would be any different? As long as it plays true up the fretboard, and you should be able to get that for 100-200, they all are in the same area quality wise. All made in China, most likely by the same one or two factories.. I hope I don't seem too harsh, but you get what you pay for, there are plenty of serviceable tenor ukes for 200, even under I'm sure, but the best? They are pretty much all the same at that price point. I just paid what would be the equivalent of 250 US$ for a Hudson HUK-MT tenor (included a hard case). I like it, eastern mahogany body, rosewood fretboard, abalone inlays. The important things though, it sounds (to me) good, even better when my Dad plays it who actually knows what he's doing, the intonation is spot on as well. And yes, it proudly stated in a now-removed gold sticker that it was indeed made in China.

Well, ok, barring any other suggestions I'll be getting one of the two ukes I mentioned. The Lanikai from a music store website and Makala from musicguymic on ebay are about the same price after shipping. Anyone like one better than the other or should I just flip a coin?

Do yourself a favor and go with musicguymic. I bought a Bugsgear Eleuke from him about a month ago and couldn't be happier.
