Ok, so I just baught a super cheap Uke at a music store, for around 50 dollars. The brand is Amigo. As I try to tune it, most of the strings are fine, but the 3rd string (the lowest one) is giving me some major problems. Whenever I try to tune it higher (to the tuner thing on this website), it puts up major resisatnce, and then rewinds if I let go of the peg. Is this normal, like, does the string just need to be "broken in" a little, or do I have a weak peg, and thus, a basically busted uke. I baught it literally yesterday, by the way, new. Any help would be much apreciated, because I really wanna learn how to play! Hanx!

I'm not sure, but I think on friction pegs if it's not staying you need to tighten the screw in them and that will solve your problem. Again, I'm not sure because I don't have friction pegs on my uke. Anyone else confirm that for me?

Hunter...

Shig's right I think... Usually you just need to tighten the screw in the peg so it will hold the string.

I don't know about the quality of the Amigo ukes, whether they're really playable or not. I know that in my area (North Carolina) the only ukes I ever see in stores are more like little toy guitars rather than actual instruments. I'd encourage you to get a good instrument as soon as you can (the Jenny sounds like a good one at a reasonable price).

Good luck with your playing. Let us know how it goes.

I wonder if this is why you see so many repaired or broken ukes on eBay?

Hunter, I am also new to the uke.  I bought an old Kingston soprano (toy).  Then got an OU-3 concert.  After some frustration, I broke down and got a Bushman "Jenny" concert ($200) and there is a whole world of difference.  I have since purchased a Bushman "Jenny" soprano ($170) and find it to be perfect for me.

Thanks for the feedback, everbody. I tried screwing the peg in...and the screw stripped. Even better, I tried to tune the 3rd string one last time...and it snapped. I also live in the NC area. and I've seen those goofy little toy guitars, but I bought this one from a music shop, under th presumption it would be of slighlty higher quality. But I'll defenetly look into that "Jenny" series, once I get the money scrapped up.

Hunter,

Don't know just where you're located, but you may be interested in CUKES (Carolina Ukulele Strummers).  http://ukulele.meetup.com/36/  There will be a state-wide meetup on May 21st.

Lots of beginners, like myself, and lots of very talented individuals.

Take it back and have them fix it. I don't care how cheap it was, a brand new unplayable instrument is unacceptable. My first uke was a Hilo that I bought from a music store for $49 and it actually played pretty good. BTW, just a long shot, but what size uke did you buy? I'm wondering if you have a bari uke and you are trying to tune it to a higher tuning?

It defenetly isn't a barritone Uke, because they had one of those in the display case too. I tried them both, but niether were tuned much, so it didn't exactly make too much of a differance. Still, I went with the regular, since it was the smaller of the two, and I just liked it's feel. I think a repair return is defenetly in hand, especially since it's so early on...

I live in the Mount Holly area of nc, by the way. Seems to be far away from anything cultural. But hey, if it's near me, then I'd check it out, if anything, to shop around for a new uke, and then guilt trip my dad into getting it, since he made me move here.

And, uh, for the record, I worked for the current one I had.

Hunter...

Mt. Holly?? You and I are neighbors! I live in Gastonia. If I were you I'd take the cheap uke back the the store and get a refund, then give me a call (704-866-4294) and I'll fix you up with a good playable uke. I've got a nice Samick UK-50 that's just like new that I'll sell you for $35. It plays and sounds great and has geared tuners. You can try it out and if you like it you can buy it.

I'll look forward to hearing from you. It's nice to know that somebody else in the area is interested in the uke. I thought I was the only one.

Woa, nutz! I went back to the store today, and despite the invoice that came with it, stating that I could return it so long as it was within 3 days of puchase, they only said I could exchange it. But if you'd be willing to hang on to it for a couple of weeks (untill my next paycheck, that is), than I'd love to buy your used uke off of you! I apreciate it, and I'll give you a call around then! Hanx!

No problemo... I'll hold onto it for you, and I'll throw in a free lesson if you want it.
