I'm looking for my first Uke. My budget range is $200-$300. I'm pretty set on a concert size. I was looking at all-koa ukes, but then this one really caught my eye:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MAPLE-w-Solid-SPRUCE-TOP-KALA-TENOR-UKULELE-KA-FMT_W0QQitemZ230281615857QQihZ013QQcategoryZ16224QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262

There's a link to a video of it being played in the description - and it sounds nice there.

Any opinions about Kala? About maple? About spruce? About Chinese-made Ukes? About other ukes that may suit me?

Thanks!
Greg

Good choice in your price range, you'll enjoy it. In other words, it's not a cheapo, go for it.

I have a Kala spruce top and am very pleased with it. Nice sound, good build quality. It's a nice way to start your collection.

Doh! I'm such a doofus. That was a tenor uke on ebay... not a concert. Well, I know Kala makes one like that in concert size too.

But... now I've also just found out about Bushman Ukes and I really like the looks of those Jennys. A very good price and from what I've read on here about them, also a very good starter uke.

Does anyone have (or have they seen) a matte finish Bushman? Why would you choose matte over gloss or vise-versa? Is it just aesthetic?

So many choices... I wish there was a Uke store near me. :)

Greg, in your price range, all you've mentioned are good ukes, just do it. No difference in anything there. Like the looks of the Bushman? Go for it. Prefer the Kala, do it.

No doubt. I'm sure I'll have one at some point, maybe even 2 or 3. But I want a concert to start with.

:P

Of course you'll have one. And more. You are already showing signs of UAS, and you haven't got your first one yet! This illness is accelerating!

Are you coming from a background playing guitar? Most people who are find the tenor scale easier to adapt to. But if you're new to stringed instruments, any scale is a fresh horizon to set out to explore.

But mark my words (I love that saying. My grandfather used to use it all the time. I can never remember what I was supposed to mark, but I sure remember that phrase.) - you will fall under the spell of a particular scale. As a proselyte for tenor scale, I suggest immediate conversion...

I have two concerts* myself, but they don't get the play my tenors do. I keep encouraging them to grow the extra inches and join with the rest, but, sadly, they do not. I suspect that before the year ends, they will be found a new home so I can adopt another member of the tenor family.

Mark my words, that's all I'll say for now.

* A Fluke and a Republic resonator. Consider the Fluke as a first uke, by the way. In either scale they are good instruments.

Yeah, I've been learning guitar for about 2 years now. I already have GAS (I've had 7 different guitars in those 2 years, down to 3 right now, and I already know the next one I want), which makes me that much more fertile for UAS to take hold and thrive. :)
