Hello,
I've been wanting to learn the Ukulele for some time and this morning I've decided I'm going to buy one. I don't want to spent a lot of money because I want to make sure I enjoy playing it first so my budget is super low. I was thinking of going with this one and a book to help me, the seller is close to where I live.

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-4-String-Ukulele-Ukelele-Uke-Soprano-Geared-Pegs_W0QQitemZ120293248257QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120293248257&_trkparms=72%3A552|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

If you think the Ukelele is too cheap I could go with this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-4-String-Ukulele-Ukelele-Uke-Solid-Top-Tenor_W0QQitemZ350087820964QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item350087820964&_trkparms=72%3A552|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I'd appreciate any help

Though my ukulele knonwledge is rather limited, I think you'd be better served to check with Musicguy Mike(http://stores.ebay.com/Musicguymics-Room).]http://stores.ebay.com/Musicguymics-Room ).[/url] He has some uke packages that are close to what you're going to spend on either of the ukes you linked to.

You can also purchase the Amigo solid top uke cheaper than the one you linked to(http://instruments.search.ebay.com/amigo_Ukulele_W0QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQdfspZ32QQfposZ24540QQfromZR2QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ32QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsabfmtsZ1QQsacatZ16224QQsadisZ200QQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ2QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZunknown).

I only have a cheap ukulele ($29) and I've been enjoying the heck out of it. Like you I only have a limited amount of money I can throw at hobbies, so I wanted to get my feet wet first. I got a "First Act" ukulele from Amazon and don't regret it in the least.

As for the ones you listed, I had better not comment. Everything I know about Ukuleles I learned here in the last two months or so.

I'm saving up my precious hobby allowance to buy a second ukulele, probably in the $300-500 range, but I bet I still leave this one near my computer where I can grab it on a moment's notice... It might get more play time than any more expensive one I buy, just because I won't worry about it.

There are dozens of ukes in this price range, almost all made in China. The build quality varies from awful to acceptable, intonation is usually mediocre but it matches the sound.

If you can afford a better one, look for one with a solid top - they start at around $75-$85 and good ones at $150-$200. Give serious consideration to a Flea or Fluke. Terrific ukes for the price. Also consider Kala and Ohana.

You should also buy an alternate set of strings, something like Aquila or Ko'olau.

Geared tuners are better to start with because they're easier to keep in tune than friction tuners.

Why anyone would spend 50 dollars on a uke is beyond me.

I mean, it's a freakin' uke! These toys just can't run over 25 bucks.

Amen, brother Neal. As my friend with the soulless Taylor guitar is fond of saying about my Martin ukes, "Man, it sounds like a uke."

Mike Lawler, sax player extrordinaire, wrote that one, thanks for the listen.

John, yer friend plays a Taylor?  I hear they intonate well.

By the Two Gawds of Amphibology, Neal, you make a comment like that over on UC - even in jest - and there are people who will pass out from sheer mortification. I can hear their blood vessels a-poppin' even as I consider it.

There are some folks there who won't even consider you worthy of being sniffled down at you if you don't play a handmade uke built by some hermit who lives on a mountain, uses all-organic glues and rare exotic woods lovingly removed from trees tended by Buddhist arborists since seedling stage, and only if he builds one uke a year, max.

Gotta spend at least $5,000 to get into the ballgame with them, and even then if the thing came out of a place that has a factory or any sort located in the same town  -even if it isn't even vaguely associated with ukuleles - they'll seriously question your dedication and sanity.

Okay Neal, I will submit to paying you $30 for each one. Is the shipping free? :)

Well, I don't mean to sound snooty, but I have to admit that this competitive bidding has finally moved it into my price range.

$25 for the lot...

Okay, wait a sec. Poor guy asked us about his first uke and here we spin off on a tangent.

But Neal has a subtle point: how much should one invest in a first instrument you're not 100% sure you will like? I'm of the "buy the best you can afford without upsetting the global balance of trade" school. Which might mean a whole lot of unused high-end ukes hanging unplayed in closets waiting for the grandkids to put on eBay in 25 or 50 years. But more likely it's a market for the mid-range Kala, Lanikai and Ohana models.

I still think you'll be more likely to get involved and learn more with a $200 instrument than a $50 one because it will be better made, sound better and provide more pleasure when you play it.
