I've got a few laminates, a couple that were sold on ebay as "vintage solidtops", and one or two others bought just because they were cheap.  I'm shop-oriented and like having some guinea pigs around to mess with.  I've been trying to make laminates sound better than they should and have been having some success.  I'd like to someday demonstrate this, though I know there are those who will feel I'm wasting time.

I've got a couple pretty good ukes too, including a Tangi and a Hamano, and also few lovely oldtimers, also made of koa and mahogany.  It's not a  boastworthy collection (no Martins, Gibsons or Kamakas), but my point is that I can make comparisons.   It seems nearly everyone in this forum has had an encounter with a cheap, cruddy, crappy uke.  I haven't though perhaps I've just been lucky.  My laminates seem to make music too.

One undeniable advantage of a laminate is that it won't crack on you.  My favourite goes to the garden and the shop with no fear.  I brought it to the beach the other day, and this winter I'll bring it cross-country skiing (we like winter picnics).  Try doing that with a solidtop at its peril!

I think anyone with musical inclination can pick up a decent laminate and make some music.  I don't think you'll find much sound or quality difference between the Lanikais or Mahalos in this price range.  I like the feel of the Mahalo neck and it intonates well.  But avoid the painted ukes, and feel free to strip the finish and make any alterations you feel like!  Strings, tuners, nuts, saddles, etc are all cheap and all make a difference.  In fact, I'm about to refret all my "vintage" laminates (whether they like it or not).

One thing I'm sure we'll all agree on: cheap ukes always have crappy strings, and strings are so much of the sound.  All my ukes are strung with Worth brown mediums.  They have a great feel.  I've got a few packs of Aquila Nylguts that I look forward to trying out.

There, said it again.  Laminates have their place.  I think Kiwaya know what they're doing.

I mean, it's a freakin' uke! These toys just can't run over 25 bucks.

By the Two Gawds of Amphibology, Neal, you make a comment like that over on UC -

Where is "UC"

UC is Ukulelecosmos.com.

I have never seen anyone make a 25 dollar uke sound "great". acceptable perhaps, but not great.

Some plastic ukes are great. Macafferri ukes are great ukes. Intonation is on, sound is big. Get a like new one though. The rest are crap.
