Hello fellow ukulele players,

I have been playing a uke (not so well) for the past 2 years. I finally decided to upgrade from a $20 uke to a nice Pono PKS2 soprano with my economic stimulus money, and till now i've been very happy. Its a much better sound, clearer, louder and generally makes me sound better.

However, just today i noticed that my E string makes a horrible vibrating sound when i strum. I'm not sure how i missed this before... But no matter how i hold down the string, and sometimes when i'm just struming it open, it makes a sound it shouldn't...and the sound seems to be coming from the saddle.

My question is...am i playing it poorly and do i just need to work on my technique? Should i replace the string (it's got the typical Ko'olau gold strings)? or is this a problem with the construction of the uke?

Any feedback would be most helpful!

R

What you are describing is called "buzz" and just about everyone has experienced it at one point or another and it is very correctible.  I'm sure dropping $300+ and hearing it is making you a little crazy and I don't blame you.

Where did you get it?  From a store or online?  Regardless of where it should have been set up and you should not have had any buzz right out of the box.  The only reason I ask is if it was a store you can walk in and they should fix it.  If it was online give them a call and see what the policy is.

There a lots of things that can cause it, like humidity differences between you and the shop.  Usually it is one fret that is a little higher than others.  You can find it by hitting notes up the scale until you don't hear it, you can figure it was the fret right before that one.

Anyway, it is not the end of the world, just an inconvenience.

leakydesk, thank you for your response! i got the uke from online...and it didn't have the buzz when i first unboxed it. I live in colorado...and it's pretty dry here. i've got a humidifier in my case, but it sounds like the dryness might be the culprit. Again, thank you. I was freaking out when i realized no matter how carefully i played it still made the sound. I'll try to find a local luthier.

Sometimes new stirngs can help. I solved my buzzing with a new set of stings.

No problem.  Nothing sucks like spending $300 and not having it perfect.  Colorado is probably the culprit.  I know there a few of us out your way that can help you with the humidity thing as well as where you might find someone to take care of the buzz for you.

Why not start new thread asking about humidity in Colorado.  You'll get some good help.

I put on new strings and got a buzz that I was able to cure. The string was not wound far enough down on the peg. The buzz was on the nut and just pushing the coil down with my fingernail fixed it.

I doubt this is your problem, but since no one mentioned it...

Where in Colorado are you?

If in the greater Denver area the guys at Denver Folklore Center know their stuff about Ukulele's.
