So, its my second day playing uke! :D
today i learned Happy Birthday, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and am working on Amazing Grace.

which brings me to my "dilemma"
i guess i didnt realize how i'd have to sing along with my playing? (im not really sure how that didnt quite register, but oh well) So, as i learn amazing grace im getting kind of nervous. i've always been timid about singing, does anyone have suggestions for improving my voice or building confidence to sing in front of others?

thanks!

Welcome to the world of uke. It's a wonderful instrument.

Sing in front of people, and ask someone with musical experience to be honest about your voice. Make improvements based on that feedback.

Practice, practice, practice.

There are plenty of ukulele players who do not sing and go the instrumentalist route.

Try to find out the right key for the songs you are trying to sing.  It may be that the particular arrangement of the song that you have may not be suitable for your vocal range (either too high, or too low).  If you find the right key for the songs, you will not have to strain to reach the high or low notes, and you will find it more comfortable.  Coordinating singing with an instrument may seem confusing at first - don't try to do too much - strum your chords on the downbeat.

I don't sing, but then I don't want to sing so that's alright. Just a bare minimum of fingerpicking or augmentation will insert a melody line in to Ukulele playing and cover for that.

But if you want to sing and are just shy or whatever, you have to do it like getting into a cold swimming pool. Just jump in. The worst part will be over in a short time, nobody really cares if your voice is perfect (as long as you are cheerful), and as soon as you get others to sing along with you, they won't be listening to your singing anyway.

As has been mentioned, if you want to improve your voice, find a complete stranger with some professional ability to point out anything you could correct. Nothing is so common as friends and family lying to you about your singing skill. Apparently those new Talent shows on TV are totally dependent on this fact for their humor content. If you want your vocal skills to be part of your package, train yourself to sing in public the same way you learn to play Ukulele, start simple and "Practice, practice, practice".

Something that might help, although since I don't sing I don't know, is one of those audio analysing tuners you can get as freeware. I use a commercial product to tune flutes and ocarinas, but I bet knowing for sure that you are hitting your note would add to your confidence.

When I wanted to get better at singing (with the banjo), I first went to a vocal production class that was offered by my county's adult education program. Not really a singing workshop, but you learned how to breathe, vocal exercises, and some singing. This was very helpful.

After that I joined some groups doing shape note (sacred harp) singing. In these settings you sing for three hours straight, and this helped even more. The more you sing, the more you sing! Go for it!

I started singing in public when I did karaoke for the first time. It's a great way of building your singing confidence and testing certain songs in front of strangers. Lots of singing careers were launched from singing karaoke. You'll end up building a repitoire of songs you can sing the best. The KJ and good singers will always help out a karaoke newbie to sing better. Who knows, maybe they'll let you sing karaoke with your ukulele.

Thanks for mentioning this, I have found a local Sacred Harp meeting and even though I don't sing (yet), my family will be going and learning to read and sing notes together.
