Hello,
So I just bought a Waverly Street Banjolele.  This will be my first experience with playing a uke.  I read somewhere that some company makes ukulele strings designed to be tuned in 5ths like a mandolin.  Since I'm already familiar with this tuning from playing mandolin I was wondering if you could help me find out what these strings are.

Thanks,
Lanny

Lanny:

I don't know of any ukulele string sets that are tuned in fifths, like a mandolin.  You will have to use nylon strings, because the banjolele neck is not designed to take the tension of steel strings.  If you want to tune your banjolele to GDAE, you will probably need to mix and match strings.  You will need a low-G set of strings for the G, D, and A (don't use the C string, and tune the E string only up to D); for the high E string, you will need to find another string of appropriate gauge (perhaps a high-E classical guitar string?)

There are hybrid instruments such as the mando-banjo, which have a mandolin neck and a banjo pot, with steel strings in normal GGDDAAEE tuning:

Aquila make Nylgut ( synthetic gut ) strings both in GDAE mandolin tuning and also CGDA mandola tuning. I think only for Tenor and Baritone Uke. I'm not  sure of any stores that stock them but I believe you can buy direct from Aquila. Just google Aquila Strings  and you will come across them.
