In one of the uke forums, there is a post that is several years old about using suction cups on the back of the body of a uke to hold one end of a neck strap. It seems like a good idea to me. The type of uke neck strap that attaches to the sound hole with a hook didn't provide the support I was looking for and I don't want to drill holes in my uke for a strap. 1) Anyone have experience using suction cups for one end of a uke neck strap? 2) I have a couple of expensive ukes and don't want to degrade the finish. Will suction cups degrade the finish on ukes? Thanks. Richard

I'm not sure suction cups are a reliable attachment method for a wooden instrument. I've never been able to make suction cups work on a wooden surface; because wood is porous, I don't think the suction seal would last very long, and you would not want to risk having your uke strap pop off while you're playing and have your uke fall to the floor on its face. Flukes and plastic body ukes might work better, unless the surface is excessively "bumpy" or textured, the way Ovation guitars are made, so suction cups may not work on those ukes either. I put one metal strap button on the bottom of my tenor and baritone ukes, and then use a Planet Waves leather mandolin strap, with the other end tied to the peghead between the two sets of tuners. It's comfortable; I don't have to use my hands to prop up the uke so I can focus on fretting and picking the strings, and I can hold the uke body away from my chest to keep it from being muted. And I don't have to worry about the strap popping off. I have found that sticky back Velcro works well. My Flea has a small strip on the bottom and I have the a matching piece on a wide shoe lace.* It can be removed from both plastic and wooden surfaces if you don't find it useful. Ralph * Want something fancier -- use a mandolin strap

Ralph, Thanks for your response. I have seen velcro strips that have removable sticky tape on the back, but they seem to be made for light items, such as posters. Could you please tell me the name of the specific velcro product that you are using that uses removable sticky tape on the back of the velcro strips and also is strong enough to support the weight of a uke via a strap. Thanks again. Richard

I think the material has the brand name Velcro. Don't get my posting wrong -- the Velcro can be removed. and in my experience at least, there is no impact on the finish of the instrument. But it is on tight and you have to peel it off slowly. I never tried Goof Off or similar adhesive solvents, but I suggest they would work too. And since Goof Off is used for removing adhesive and some paints, it should be good for the Velcro sticky stuff. I use a strap button on my wooden ukes (a traditionalist), but the Flea has the Velcro.
