I bought my first baritone uke a few weeks ago; it's my first stringed instrument. I have two issues with tuning the uke.

1) When I attempt to tune a string to G, my chromatic tuner will read it is perfectly tuned to G, then the needle will swing to being perfectly tuned to D. I'm not quite sure why it's doing this.

2) The D and G (or what's supposed to be G) strings sound far too deep when compared to the B and E strings. I'm not sure if I should tune up an octave or what. I'm afraid I'll break a string.

Sorry if I'm asking obvious questions...like I said, I'm a complete beginner. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Sometimes a battery going "out" in my electronic tuner will cause the "swinging" needle action or inconsistent readouts. Are the batteries good and new (the ones that come with the tuners are often not the best quality...)?

No, the batteries are fairly new. Do you think it's possible for the D string to vibrate while I'm tuning the G string?

Some electronic tuners pick up overtones.  (Strings do not generate "pure" tones, otherwise they would sound like an organ pipe. )   The baritone should be tuned to DGBE, not GCEA.  You can still generate the reference notes once you have tuned the lowest string by fretting the tuned string.  Here's how it works:

1.  The low string of your baritone should be tuned first, and that string should be tuned to D.   After you have that low string tuned, press down on that string at the 5th fret, and pluck the string.  The note you hear will be the next higher note for tuning the second lowest string, G.

2.  You can repeatedly pluck the fretted low string as your reference as you tighten the second lowest string.  Then, use your electronic tuner to fine tune it to exact G.

3.  To tune the 3rd string (second highest), fret the G string at the 4th (not the 5th) fret, and pluck the string - this will generate the B note for tuning the 3rd string.  Then, use your electronic tuner to fine tune the 3rd string.

4.  Fret the 3rd string at the 5th fret to generate the high E note for the 4th (high) string.
