I appreciate all the tabs and links that are on this forum, so far it's been a great help to me. I am not a skilled musician, neither in technique nor theory, but I am finding the ukulele very easy to play. But I just found this last night. http://www.chrisowen.co.uk/ukulele.html A simple finger picking version of Greensleeves. Much nicer than just "strum strum strum" but not as difficult as some things you might see. I would say it's close to my limit of physical skills right now. Can anyone suggest similar items to me? They would have to be fairly well known, because I sorta need to know what it sounds like first. Something I might be likely to find an MP3 of ... Maybe from the same period and from the European area? I can't even call any to mind so I can do a search. Thanks in advance for any hints or suggestions.

There are some interesting variations online for Greensleeves, including this one right here on the EZFolk site for baritone uke: http://www.ezfolk.com/uke/tabs1/baritone-uke-tabs/greensleeves/greensleeves-fng/greensleeves-fng.html This works well for a low-G tuning, too. And this nice one for high-G from Buke: http://www.microshare.net/buke/downloads/GCEA/Intermediate/Greensleeves_I_C.pdf Check Buke's site for more. I found his tabs to work well. He categorizes them by skill level. too.

Much nicer than just "strum strum strum" You might try different finger picking patterns on this if you plan to sing. Part of the fun of the ukulele for me is inventing strums and creating rhythms with muting, accenting, and other right and left hand techniques. you can mix fingerpicking with strums to add interest too. Strumming doesn't have to be strum, strum, strum.

I tried to sing once. There are UN conventions against me trying again. I do try different strum patterns, and usually end up picking most things, because I want to set a pretty high bar for myself. I've only been playing for about 10 days, so I want to start off on the picking first, rather than maybe get complacent and just strum. Plus, without the melody of voice, picking is probably more interesting and tolerable for my family when I practice... I like the high pure tone of the Ukulele, and my personal taste is for traditional european music. I was quite impressed by this guy. http://www.youtube.com/user/wwelti

I liked the Utube video, and I wish you the best on the road to playing like that. I think I was responding to some scorn I detected from you about rhythm players. I can see we like to play different types of music. Check out James Hill on Utube and the One Note Samba where the ukulele is used as a percussion instrument. That's what I go for - I hear the drum in my ukulele, and it's not 'complacent'. It sounds like you are coming from a classical background, and I come the uke with my experience as a drummer. The little ukulele can accommodate an amazing number of styles. There's lots of room to grow and no need for either of us to become stagnant. Best wishes on your musical journey.

Yeah, no, I'm not against strumming, just since I don't sing, I need to get a little more melody in there. No offense meant. Since I will almost certainly be playing for my own entertainment, and since part of the fun for me is figuring things out, finger picking is probably best for me. My musical background is almost non-existant, I usually get more pleasure out of listening to music than I do out of playing it..

Rick Sauer of Risa ukuleles has put out a book you might find interesting. It's about playing in the chord melody style. He teaches picking out the melody, then adding the chords with the melody note in the top, You need to know about chord inversions to do this. The best part is it would teach you to do your own arrangements, and you wouldn't have to rely on someone else to post tabs to a tune you wanted.

"Fingerstyle Solos for Ukulele" by Mark Kailana Nelson. http://mark-o.com/ I'd suggest, Yoik, this great book on fingerpicking/chord melody. Yeah, you have to *buy* it, but it's great in that it develops this type of skill in a sequential manner--and the songs are really nice. There's also an accompanying CD so you can hear what it's "supposed" to sound like (or play along, if you're that skilled!). For specific details, I did a brief review of this book here: http://www.4thpeg.com/parlor_room/viewtopic.php?t=2653

Seriously... I found the little room in our flat had excellent acoustic properties and I learned heaps of tunes and songs in there, away from the family and neighbours. The flats we lived in were the tower block type, beloved of sardine architects since time immemorial. The bathroom and loo were placed in the middle of the blocks, with no windows or fresh air. To combat the obvious shortcomings of this method of building an air conditioning system had been built in. Oblivious of this I sat in splendid isolation, yodelled away to my heart's content, and picked better and better each day. I wasn't bad, if I say so myself. I found out years later that I had quite a fan club amongst the neighbours who would listen to me as they soaked in their bath or attended to Nature's Call. Unfettered by convention I came up with an eclectic repertoire. Strum, pick, frail, it mattered not. The more the merrier. In short, don't get hung up on technique... practise them all. (This applies equally to any field of human endeavour.) Hugs

I always used to wonder why in Church, when everyone stood up to sing, people would start to frown and look confused, stop singing and peer at me angrily then move away. I thought it might be bad breath... turns out that not only can't I sing, but I sing so badly that I drag other folks out of tune. When I do accidentally hit the right notes, my voice is still unpleasant. Now I just mouth the words to prevent the fistfights with my pastor over lost parishioners.

Yoik wrote: I always used to wonder why in Church, when everyone stood up to sing, people would start to frown and look confused, stop singing and peer at me angrily then move away. I know your problem... you're trying to sing like someone else. It doesn't work. You got to sing like you. I never understood why Church singing often sounds so dreadful. It's dawned on me in latter years that tenors, for instance, are trying to sing in a key dictated by the organist. "How Great Thou Art" is a splendid example. All the funerals I've been to lately (and their number increases annually) have been notable for the mumblings of a congregation trying to fit in with the organist. There's a general feeling of relief when the chorus finally comes round and everybody lifts their voice. Sing in private. I used to sing in boiler sheds where I could barely hear myself, or in the truck driving from site to site up in the Waitaki. Pick a favourite song, learn the words as you go and sing it in the unaccompanied key of your choice. I reckon you might be pleasantly surprised by the result. And sing as loud as you can, trying to push your voice out of the top of your head. This advice was given to me by a member of a World-travelling choir from New Zealand. Good Luck

Oh no... Thank you for your concern, and it was very good advice, but I was mostly joking. I don't have a problem singing, I just don't sing. For the most part, I enjoy listening more than I do singing, and when I'm by myself I prefer silence. But people always ask me why I don't join in on sing-alongs and such, so I've worked up a batch of jokes about how poorly I sing. It's just a comedy bit. Not necessarily good comedy, just comedy. But as with most things that have been available to me, I took classes and learned to sing fairly accurately. My voice isn't as naturally pleasant as some, but I applied myself to my lessons anyway. I never did find the enjoyment in singing that most people seem to and I have found that singing along makes it harder to appreciate the singing of others. Most people don't seem to want to accept that answer, and always press me to try this or that, or just enjoy singing badly or whatever, so I usually try to deflect them with humor. Eventually it turned into a comedy bit. The church thing is a take off on "Alice's Restaurant" where "they all moved away from me there on the bench". It may not work as well on the internet as in person....

No worries, I'm glad for the perspective. But now I'm all stuck on figuring out a good Alice's Restaurant on Uke. See what you started? I found C, A7, D7, G7 and that's simple and easy, but I'd like a little more. Edit: Found it! (or part of it)
This is fun.... Last edited on Sun Jun 15th, 2008 07:03 pm by Yoik ____________________ __Ukulele Villian__ My other instrument is a pipe My homemade ceramic pipes A forum about simple flutes |

You may be interested in "Jumping Jim's Ukulele Masters: John King" - this book contains excellent transcriptions of classical pieces and a nice CD. Rigk Sauer's book is nice too, but I think the John King book may be more up your alley.

Thanks Gaby, That whole "Jumping Jim's" series seems interesting. Not too much Hawaiian, not too much "The Bear went over the Mountain" yet also not too much obscure Classical. I've ordered one and will see, maybe I would like them all?

----- I've promoted this one before, because I'm just impressed with it. It's Roy Smeck's "Martin Ukulele Waltz" and here it is by ukulelezaza on YouTube, showing off his 4 beautiful little Martin ukes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAcIGmVMTMs#syF8C9lEQpI The tablature is here, and it's 'exactly' the same as what ukulelezaza in YouTube is playing: http://home.arcor.de/crazydawg/ukulele/magic_ukulele_waltz.txt Just learn it one measure at a time, and try to play it each time precisely....as ukulelezaza does on YouTube. Notice his right hand work and where he holds onto the uke. Also, click on the blue word 'ukulelezaza' and you can hear more from him on his YouTube site and also on his MySpace site. P.S. When you get Alice's Restrauant all tabbed out, please post it for us! (I like the short tab you gave us) ----- Last edited on Sun Aug 10th, 2008 03:36 am by ezmember |
