Just thought I'd do a quick review of my Ohana Vita uke for anyone who might be contemplating buying one. I've had mine for about five weeks now and it has quickly become my favourite player for the following reasons: 1.) It sounds great! 2.) It is very easy to play (the action is very low but there is no sign of any string buzz) 3.) The intonation is excellent. 4.) It is very comfortable to hold and play. (Don't be put off by the unconventional body shape. It actually seems easier to cradle and hold than the conventional figure eight) 5.) Because it was not an expensive uke I have been taking it with me as a travel uke and if something happens to it I will be able to afford to replace it. I really don't want anything to happen to it though because I love it! If you are looking for a cheap starter uke or a travel uke that is easy to play and sounds great I would highly recommend the Ohana Vita. I have posted a quick video on youtube of an original fingerstyle song played on the Vita. Low quality video and not played very well but gives some idea of the sound of the Ohana. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=9DyVNXlg7YQ Last edited on Wed May 28th, 2008 09:36 am by fossil |

Yeah, it sounds like a fine instrument in the right hands. Great playing! I'm looking for a 2nd uke. My first is an Applause UAE20 which I've ordered but haven't yet received. I'm not in a great hurry for a 2nd as the 1st will entertain me for awhile, but with a bit of spare time and no uke in my hand, I'm already researching. The LANIKAI LFM-S FLAME MAPLE SOPRANO UKULELE sells for $200. and it would give me a bright sound I think, but I'm also interested in what you've got. What a sweet tone! (but it wouldn't sound as good in my hands mind you). Very good price too! I wonder if anyonehas an opinion about the Lanikai.

I've only played one Lanikai and it was twice the price of the Ohana and didn't sound anywhere near as good. Maybe it was not typical of Lanikai ukes in general however. If you are looking for a good, reasonably priced uke I think the Ohana Vita is a good choice. The body shape might not be traditional but the sound and playability are excellent. It also has a solid top so the sound should improve with time. I hear the Flea and Fluke ukuleles are also good but I haven't tried one yet.

The Lanikai might be hit and miss as many ukes seem to be in this price range. I hear the Fluke/Fleas are consistent though I'm really leaning toward the Vita. The bigger soundbox must make a difference. I hear exceptional sustain which also has to do with your playing I think. I'm sure I can't produce it as well, at least not at this early stage. I've considered a fluke or flea and only hesitate as I've already purchased an Applause UAE20 which also has a plastic back. I'm shopping for a 2nd so my wife can practise along with me as she's been showing interest in it. She's never picked up my guitar, but I think the uke is such an approachable instrument. You only need a few chords and a bit of strumming technique to make music. Thanks for your advice!
