So when someone says to you "Nice guitar, Play something" what do you play? Or even someone does know it is a ukulele. Guess I am looking for suggestions for a simple but flashy little tune to quickly show off the uke. It would probably be nice if it had a familiar melody, but maybe more important it be catchy.

Any suggestions?

Sometimes, the song you choose to play depends upon the age of the audience.  What works for adults won't necessarily be recognized by teenagers, and vice versa.  Most adults my age or older would recognize "Walk Right In" from the 1963 recording by the Roof Top Singers.  Here's my arrangement:

Take Me Out To The Ballgame is almost universally recognizable.  It sounds flashier if you play it in a jazzy, syncopated 4/4 time instead of the traditional 3/4 time.

Great ideas, Will. I also like to throw in something with a bit of chord solo-ing or fingerpicking so they hear an ukulele can be played with more than strumming. A simple chord solo version of "Aloha Oe" works well because they typically recognize it as "Hawaiian"--and most people think of ukuleles as Hawaiian in some way or another...

Thanks.  All of my posted uke songs are played chord-solo style.  I have a chord-lyric sheet:

http://servercc.oakton.edu/~billtong/chord-lyrics/Aloha_Oe_in_C.pdf

and a posted recording of Aloha Oe:

I would play While My Guitar Gently Weeps or Blue Roses Falling in this situation.  Both are actually fairly easy to play, especially Blue Roses Falling.

The problem is, I rarely get any comments when playing my ukulele around other people, mostly at my church.  I seem to become invisible with a ukulele in hand.:P

Is Harrison's "Something" too obvious?

Good how-to on beatlesite.info

It depends on your audience and if you'd like to sing and play or just play.

On the uke, I'll sing and play IZ's "Over the Rainbow". Even if the person/s (young or old) never heard of IZ, they'll recognize the tune. The "Lion Sleeps Tonight" is another fun tune to sing and play reggae style.

For just playing, I'll play any nice three chord progression with some different strum techniques.

leakydesk wrote: Is Harrison's "Something" too obvious?I don't think so.  "Something" has several things going for it:
  • even if you just strum the chords, it is instantly recognizable
  • the unusual progressions sound rather sophisticated, but
  • are remarkably easy to play on a uke.
This can also lead into a conversation about Harrison's love of the uke, which lends the instrument a credibility that Tiny Tim damaged almost beyond recognition for people above a certain age.

Some very good suggestions on songs. As for the Beatlesinfo site, probably a stupid question, but how do people use the site? Meaning, do you just try to keep up with the chord changes and play along? Or, is there a way to simply print out the chords? I've printed out the words once and tried to write down the chords as the song plays along.

It is a fun site, but I do not feel I am taking full advantage of it.

Thanks for any input,

Art

That's how I used it.  I would print out the lyrics and write the chords overtop.  I found it helpful for a while to see the chord changes as they happened.  Mostly I liked it because it was the first Beatles music I had found, I hadn't been to Chordie yet.

Make sure you check out Harrison's "Devil and the deep blue sea" on youtube.  It's a nice easy play as well.....

Elsewhere. My wife usually makes that request. "Play something. Elsewhere."

I'm still struggling with the chords...

Since Dominator is on this thread, I wanted to express thanks for his tutorial on "Something". Even though I have not mastered it yet, it is a great piece of work from a great musician.
