Hi, I just joined.  I'm 73.  Been playing guitar since I was 12 and never got much better. I used to want a uke so bad. Now I have a bunch.  My 2 favorites are a Kala tenor, spruce top, and a Kala concert, cedar top. bought from Musicmanmike. Aquila strings.  I sing folksongs, blue grass and country and write some, too. This is a great forum.  Glad to be here.  ...Bill

Bill: Welcome. The only thing we really have in common is that we both are 73. I never played an instrument until trying the uke several years ago. (I did take piano lessons for a few years when I  was a kid and parents were pleased but I wasn't...too interested in school sports). Anyway, health interruptions have slowed my pace with the uke and I'm never going to be anything but a please-myself strummer and an occasiional gig ;) leader accompanying a small church congregation in fun praise songs. I honestly believe that one can have joy in playing the uke no matter the skill level. Hope you enjoy and learn from the more talented ukers here.  Nod

Thanks for the welcome, Nod.  It sounds like our skill level is similar.  My best song is, Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue.  At the end of the month I'm playing at a local Senior Center.  Maybe just with the guitar. We'll do some sing alongs like Good night Irene.  I'd like to get some folks interested in a Uke group. Seems like a good project for retired people.  ....Bill

Hey you two old guys!  Make room for a young'un.  You got me by only 23 years, Bill.  I think the uke keeps you young, heck, any instrument will, but the ukulele especially.

I'll catch up, sooner than I expect... I expect.

Guess the uke is the great leveler, Neal. Makes us all feel young.  I just got through singing some Old Timey songs with my baritone uke. It's an "entry level".  I had it strung for regular uke tuning but, then, I got a tenor, so I bought some baritone Aquila strings and tuned it up proper.  Nice strings.

Hello all!  New to the forum and also to the ukulele, but the forum's been a great help - I've just ordered my first ukulele from ebay and can't wait for it to arrive!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=310040225703&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=021

I hope I've made an OK choice?  You all seem to have some experience, any comments would be much appreciated.  Sure it's quite sufficient for a first-timer - but I hope I'll also be playing when I'm 73!  From what I've read here it seems like the ukulele's a long-term love affair.  I'm looking forward to it.

Jill

Hi, Jill.  Ukuleles are pretty easy to learn, especially if you play guitar at all.  Of course there are some players who are experts and then, there are ones like I am who strum for their own enjoyment.  Have fun!

Hi Bill and Jill,  I just discovered some great tabs today at:

http://www.doctoruke.com/songs.html

Enjoy them, and search this Forum for good information, and ask lots of questions. :)

Thanks Bill.  I'm not particularly musical, so I think I'll be playing just for my own enjoyment, like you.  I've learnt a few bits and pieces on the guitar, but I'm not very good.  I have difficulty reaching for the more difficult chords, so I'm hoping I'll find the ukulele a bit easier, and a bit less frustrating!  Then maybe I'll go back to the guitar again.  Have you been plaing ukulele for a while then?  Did it take you long to get into it?

And thanks ezmember - that looks like a great site.  Lots of good stuff there.  There's so much I want to play I'm worried I'm being over ambitious and will get disheartened when I actually give it a shot.  Guess I just have to practice and be patient.

Jill

Hi Phil.  Haha, this is great - Bill, Phil and Jill!  Maybe we should play as a trio!

Hi Jill,  I found it easy to go from the guitar to the ukulele.  Once I realized that the fingering for the chords was just like the high 4 strings of the guitar.  The difference is, you are in a different key.  The C chords on the Uke are like the G chords on the guitar.  (Baritone chords are just like the high 4 guitar strings.)  Now the problem is, when I play the ukulele for a while it's hard to go back to the guitar and deal with those 2 base strings.

Mr Phil, If you strum real loud, I might hear you.  I'm just about 10 miles away in Gilmanton!

Hi, I'm also new here, however I've been reading the various posts for awhile.  I've only been playing for around 6 months but I'm clearly hooked.  I've purchased 3 so far, and only one was worth it.  I've sold one and am selling the other one.  Obviously I am good at learning from my many mistakes.  I'm about to go to Mike Pereira at MP Ukuleles for a custom tenor.  I've heard nothing but good about him and his work, and for the amount I'm about to drop on a uke it was recommended I consider him, as his customs are said to be high quality yet affordable.  What's your opinion of tenors?  I've read various opinions on the different sizes.  The only uke I'm keeping of my current (small) collection is a concert.  As I said, I've always enjoyed your posts.

Thanks,

Paul

Well in my humble opinion I really like the tennor.  My Wife has a soprano and it is a lot harder for my big ole fingers to play.  I am so new at this however I am hardly past the ez cords.  I use a KALA tenor that seems to suit me well.  I have my eye on a Banjo uke at our local music shop, it is not a sweet sounding but is louder.  I am also ordering a PAPA's cigar box tenor and I cant wait to see how it plays.

All the bsst

PHil
