I know that strings can vary according to Lot # or whatever they call it, and I'm not sure which specific Lot I have on my 2 Kala Concerts, but I'd like to ask a general question anyway, about how you think these two ukes should sound, based on the wood and strings.

Both are Concert Ukes and have silver Aquilla wound low-G strings.

One is a Kala KA-KC which I think is laminated KOA wood.  The other 3 strings are brown Worths (but may...be Hilos?).

The other is a Kala KA-MC (Mango wood), the other 3 strings are brown Worths.

Knowing what you know about wood and strings, how do you think each Uke would sound?

Both of those Kalas have laminated body, so it's probably difficult to say what they should sound like.  In theory, they would sound the same since the veneer wood (mango and koa) really wouldn't have much, if any, influence on the sound.  In real life, of course, every uke probably sound slightly different if you listen hard enough.

Do you prefer low G?  Put one in high G for a switch.

But to give a shot at your question, umm.. good?

Was my question stupid?  I apologize for asking it.

Not stupid, just unclear.  No apology necessary.

Let me try to clear it up.  First, I already have hi-g on my long-neck KoAloha Soprano, so that takes care of that. :)

The reason I asked that question is so I can get a general opinion of what kind of sound you would think I should be getting outta my ukes, based on wood and strings, and if what you say harmonizes with my actual experience with these ukes.  Which uke would you think would sound more mellow and soft (baritony), and which would you think would sound more bright and loud (more ukey)?  But...my not knowing the specific kind of strings probably makes all the difference in the world, you probably couldn't make a prediction, so that's an important variable that I left out.

Based on the info I gave above, the Kala Koa uke to me sounds much more bright and loud (ukey).  The Kala Mango uke sounds significantly more mellow (baritony).  I wonder if this is typical of the two woods?

If the Mango is a laminate I wouldn't know that, because mgm doesn't say on his auctions.  He only reveals when a wood is solid, but doesn't reveal when it's laminate.  I think buyers deserve to know when Mango actually means Mango laminate.  Live and learn.

Anyhow, forget the original question.  Let's talk about strings.  I got so tired of that Low-G Worth-less string (it kept falling off....), that I replaced it with a silver wound Aquilla string and it's working just fine, it's nice and tight.  I think I'll try some Hilo's.
