I've decided to get back into playing Uke. I used to own a Flea awhile back and really liked it. Now I've decided to get a tenor. I went to my local music store, which happens to have a decent selection of ukes--mostly high end--and they had two tenors for under $500. Everything else was above. The first one is a Tenor Fluke. Asking $210 I know the Fluke and like the sound. The second one is a Tenor Kala--I think spruce--for $299 but the owner will discount $40 because of a blemish in the wood. I thought the Fluke had a fuller sound but I've heard lots of great things about the Kala. (They did have a concert Kala with electronics for $169 that was nice but I plan to do fingerstyle and up the neck work so I'm sticking with the tenor.) Any thought on these two ukes? If you like the fuller sound, maybe the Fluke is for you. Then again, it could have been the strings. A Kala can sound pretty full with the right strings. The two Ukes definitely look different from each other, so which 'look' do you like best? Which do you think you'd rather hold onto when you're playing? I have Kala's and like them a lot, but I don't have a Fluke so I can't compare them. Hopefully someone who has both will jump in here and give you a better opinion than mine. Good Luck and let us know what you decide. And oh, it's nice to support your local stores once in a while. Last edited on Wed Mar 19th, 2008 04:55 am by ezmember |

I bought a Kala tenor spruce top for my first uke and I'm delighted with it. Great sound, nice to play, light, comfortable feel. I got mine from eBay seller musicguymic. I'd buy both from him again and other Kalas in the future (I got infected with UAS very quickly, it seems). I got the cutaway/electronics model and find sometimes the wiring in the body shifts so a wire lightly touches the soundboard, which in turn buzzes a bit, but it's easily moved. I plan to add a small harness to the wiring when I change the strings to avoid this problem in future. That's been the only issue I've encountered. Ukes are new to me, but from my experience with guitars, I'd say the Kala is a really nice instrument: well made, good quality, good hardware, good intonation. I also got an Eleuke, but that's a whole other kettle of fish (a good one, mind you, but a very different sounding instrument).

I actually wound up getting the Kala KA-TE....that's a Mahongany Tenor with electronics. From musicguymic..as most people seem to. (Great guy, great service.) It came with Aquila strings. Much quieter in acoustic mode than I expected but that's not a big deal. I'm happy with it. I had a question about the tuners and emailed Kala. The president of the company called me to answer my questions. I was impressed.

Hello, As you know, I have to drop a note on this within the first 24 hours to register as a real person, so I'll quote Mr. Natural, who pointed out, "Don't be flat. Don't be sharp. Be natural." Okay, I'm in. I was in Hawaii and played my friend's uke for 30 minutes, put a six chord dittie together, went to the local flea market, bought a concert uke and it felt like the right thing to do. I then went to Florida and found an electric uke, tiny amp, and tiny FX generator, with drum machine. So, stand clear of the abuse area as I intend on abusing the norm when it comes to vibrating the air via my new creative outlet. Cheers, Brian Wizard. For more on me, check out brianwizard.com. I have musical CDs and stuff. PS: My latest project is turning two published stories into dramatic audio plays. This uke thing will make for some fun instrumental breaks between tracks.
