A friend of mine plays acoustic guitar and really wants an Acoustic-Electric Concert Uke, but I don't know anything about them. She's got her mind set on the Concert size and there's no talking her out of it. The only problem is...I can only find two acoustic-electrics in the Concert size. Does anybody have experience with either or both of these that could give some advice on which might be best? Here's the Kala: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250224858101&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=015 Here's the Oscar-Schmidt: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160211256005&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=006 (I think there's also a cheaper Oscar-Schmidt as well but it's a little too much so, I think.)

Hmm... let's see, Oscar Schmidt, 249, probably not set up, I've always questioned the OS line, it's all bling and no sing. However, there will be those that disagree. Intonation is spotty at best on all that I've played, I think someone here has one though and really likes it. OS has come out with a new line that is perfectly acceptable, I played one a few weeks ago at a local music store, but this isn't the one. Kala.. well, it's a Franklin cheaper, MGM will set it up. This one has a solid top, the OS does not. Is this a trick question?

I once had this K-Wave Les Paul model. It is a concert sized solid wood uke (only the black version is all solid) that sounded pretty good both acoustically and plugged in. I sold it after getting a Honu concert and installing a pickup on one of my tenors, but I liked that uke and have no problems recommending it, especially if the Les Paul shape appeals to your friend (there is also a Telecaster version). I would say the plugged in sound is actually superior to the sound coming out of my Pono cedar top with the Dean Markley undersaddle pickup. Hmm...now that I'm looking at it, I kind of wish I still had it. I love the Les Paul shape. Perhaps one day I'll get me one of these.

Neal, all my questions are trick questions. I know everything and only ask questions here to see how much you guys really know. Which isn't much, you know. haha Now that GX9901 has found me the La Paula Concert acoustic-electric uke, I'm lusting after the brown one on the bottom left. I started a thread asking for donations for my dream uke and nobody responded. How heartless is this bunch of uke players around here! If everybody here would just simply donate a couple hundred, think how happy I could be? And you all could forever revel in the joy of giving! Oh yea, back to my friend. Well, reality is, like me she sure can't afford the La Paula, but I know she'd love it. She was at first satisfied just knowing she could get an inexpensive Kala with electricity, but after she saw the cutaway model, she was really happy. Unless someone chimes in and says great things about the OS, I think the Kala is her best bet. I just received my new Kala Mango Concert from mgm today and it's beautiful and sounds wonderful! I think he put Aquillas on it, they're so much easier to play than the GHS's. I think musicguymic is a prophet. I can't believe he can get these things to us so fast. I think he knows ahead of time who's going to bid and where they are, and sends their stuff out 2 days before they hit the button on ebay. Yea, that must be true.

I bought a Kala acoustic tenor with a pickup. Very nice and the best of both worlds! I don't recommend a solid body electric as a first/main uke because it doesn't sound like a ukulele, rather like an electric guitar with nylon strings. I can say that because I also bought a Bugsgear Eleuke tenor, solid body and can compare the sounds every day as I pratice. The advantage of the Eleuke is that it can be played through headphones, and not disturb anyone (like my wife who gets annoyed at hearing me strive to master Tiptoe Through the Tulips at midnight...) But the Kala sounds a lot nicer.
