Not sure I really understand the Herco Humidifier. My questions are, does the core inside absorb moisture, guess I assume so? If so should one let it soak for a while before it is ready for use?, Or is simply putting a little water on top of core enough? Also, is putting it in the Uke case enough, or should one put the Uke and humidifier in a plastic bag?

The clay element, or "core" of the Herco, will hold a fair amount of moisture. It's designed to be soaked in water then placed in a closed case.

I've read reports from folks who have measured the humidity in the case with a Herco, including some who have put as many as three in a single uke case to attain the level of humidity they wanted. I suppose you could put the uke and Herco in a bag and get the humidity way up there, but I'd think the transitions between that and taking it out to play would be harder on the wood.

I've a Herco that came with my uke. It's in a drawer somewhere.:)

Thanks, I forgot the core was clay. Seems like I recall about a 5 minute soak in my lost instructions, does that sound like enough, every 5 days or so?

I'd think five minutes would work, though I'd probably do more like 15 if I were using the thing.

I do recall, btw, reading that it's best to use distilled water for the soak to prevent odd things growing on the clay. Unless you like odd things, of course. :)

I've got a Herco and a Humistat.  Not sure how I'd compare their effectiveness, but the Humistat is much easier to use.  I just refill it every month.
