My Wife and I have been playing ukulele for about a year. We have just started to play tabs. instead of just strumming. Can any one recommend a good song book of tabs that is easy for beginners to play? We have found a lot on line, but would like to find an already put together book for newbies. As you know the more advanced stuff can be scary.

 Thanks!

Type Ukulele Tablature into Google and lots of sites will come up that have free tabbed songs, including this site we're on (go to Tabs/Tutorials above).  There's a wealth of stuff out there on the Net.  I'm sure you can find ukulele books that way too.

All of the Jumpin Jim's books are good, with the chord charted out above the lyrics.  If you've got a music store nearby, look in their Uke section and hopefully they'll have a bunch to choose from.  Good luck and enjoy learning together!  :)

A very good book is "Fingerstyle Solos for Ukulele", Mark Nelson. It includes a CD of songs which is very helpful. The variety of songs is very good. About 5 of the 27 songs are quite easy, then they ramp up a bit in difficulty with some quite challenging.

My favorite site for ukulele tab is Uke Hunt , http://ukulelehunt.com/ , Al does many nice tab arrangements. I would say buying his book of Christmas Songs is a must. Very nice arrangements of finger style and chording, and all quite easy to play. It is down-loadable for about $7 I think. Some of the songs are not that seasonal, more English traditional.

Good Luck

Also the site, http://www.ukulele.de.vu/ , contains many popular tunes that are easy to play with many that have video's.

John King's "Famous Solos & Duets for the Ukulele" is do-able if you take it slow.  Once you start to figure it out, there are lots of songs in there at the same level that can be played without too much difficulty.  AND there are even a few duets in the back!

Don't forget to get Ralph Shaw's DVD "Essential Strums for the Ukulele".  It's a must IMHO.  You can get it from musicguymic on Ebay or maybe a local music store.  It teaches you how to do such strums for Samba, Reggae, Bossa Nova, Triple Strum, Frailing, Blues, Bo Diddley, etc, etc, etc.  The teaching is superb!

Hi there.

I'm Scott's wife. Thought I would chime in. Thanks for all your responces. I love that there is a ukulele community like this.

The Tablature that we are liking are the ones that are that American classic songs that we know the tune for and where the sheet music and lyrics are included. Google search has led me to my favorite collection here:
http://www.theuke.com/download.php?list.2

They aren't too hard. And with the exception of a few exceptions, they are all one note at a time and not to too long, recognizable, etc.

I'm happy to search the internet for freebies, I was just hoping to find a book of songs like these to have on hand as a reference.

Even though it isn't quite the songs we are looking for, John King's "Famous Solos & Duets for the Ukulele" looks like a good additional choice to have.

I have stumbled on this site http://www.ukulele.de.vu/  before but I'm embarassed to say, it is somewhat confusing to me without the lyrics. I have trouble reading that music.

Thanks again.:dude:
Holly

The John King book is most definitely NOT just one note at a time.  There are a couple of sample pages here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0786669152/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link

I would say the "Haele" song is most typical of what you'll find throughout the book.
