Without playing them, and going by the specs, I'd go with the Ohana, simply because it is solid wood. The Kala doesn't specify solid wood anywhere but the neck. The Kala looks nice in the mango, but along with the silly gold tuners and buttons and lack of solid wood, it seems to be going more on looks than build. I'm guessing you'll actually want to play it, too. :) Get some Worth strings put on or sent along with it.

I just got this Kala KA-MC from musicguymic on Ebay.  I think the MC stands for Mango Concert, whereas the KC stands for Koa Concert.  IF that's true, then your Kala choice won't be both Koa and Mango.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330215565158&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=014

I have the Kala Concert KA-KC, like you mentioned as one of your choices, and for not much more money and the extras mgm includes, I got the Kala Mango Model (KA-MC) Concert.  It should be here by next Wed (Mar 12) so I can give you a review then. :)

The other Uke you mentioned is here (Ohana CK 50G):

http://cgi.ebay.com/OHANA-CK-50G-SOLID-Cedartop-rosewood-CONCERT-UKULELE_W0QQitemZ250221817576QQihZ015QQcategoryZ16224QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I've never played that Uke (Ohana), but wait for others to chime in here and also consider the extra free stuff musicguymic includes with each Uke.  I think the shipping is free with the Kala and not with the Ohana, and the extra free stuff is different with each one.

See which one you think is the better Uke after hearing from some others here.  I can vouch for Kala quality, true tone up the neck, but I don't have the Mango one yet.

The following link shows personal opinions about Kala ukes on another site:

You can also do a Search on this Forum in the Search-box above for both the Kala and Ohana ukes.

IMO, Ohana/Bushman/Vineyard are a step up from Kala/Lanikai (in general).

I haven't played the Kala, but if it's laminate I'd say it's not going to age as well as the Ohana.  I've played the Ohana and it kicks butt.  I almost bought one, but I was holding out for a KoAloha so I had to pass.

You might be able to call MGM & have him play them over the phone for you.  I've heard he does that from time to time.

That was a joke, right? I can't see how that could be any help. Phone speakers really aren't the best audio equipment on the planet.

Michael is a great guy, and he'd probably play them through the phone if you asked, but I agree it wouldn't tell you much other than how they sound through the phone.:)

As well, you'd be hearing the factory strings at that point, which aren't usually very telling on ukes in that price range. Putting Aquilas or Worths on either would probably make a great difference - they have on even higher quality ukes I've bought.

Re: the freebies and such, with most folks he's been happy to change out what you want, don't want, swapping a pitch pipe for an electronic tuner for the price difference, etc. I wouldn't let the freebies determine which uke I would buy.

Both of these will be strung with Aquilas according to the listings.

Based on the specs I'd go with the Ohana as well.  Solid wood is almost always the better way to go.

I have played the Kala laminated Mango ukes and I actually preferred the Kala ukes with the solid spruce tops.  The solid spruce topped Kalas (either maple or mahogany back/side) sounded superior to the laminated topped Kalas I've tried.

:D The Aqualele? I picked it out the way I guess most ukie-wannabees pick out their first instrument: "How much is that? Great, I take one."

And it's not played in a tub, but in a hot spring on Iceland.

My experience is that the same ukulele can sound very different at different times. If I'd buy a quality ukulele today I would play it a few times and have others play it for me.

But, I know, sometimes you just want something really bad and you hope that look or brand or whatever will be a guarantee for great sound. Still I wouldn't say "it's a great uke! I've heard it played over the phone."

I don't think inferno can go wrong with either of the ukes he mentioned.  They're both really nice ukes and have a good reputation, and are in the same price range.  The ukes people prolly oughta steer clear of isn't one of his choices, and that's good.

My opinion, it's a horse apiece.  Get the one that looks best.  Both decent ukes.  I can say with some certainty that you will not tell a difference in sound between them.  I may be wrong, but with an inexpensive uke, looks and playability, and intonation are the important factors.  Resale?  Quality? Sound?  Most likely the same.

Getting Mike to play over the phone can reveal intonation problems.  Soundwise, correct, on the phone? No.  But when he plays for you a G in the 4th position, you'll know if it intonates.  That's the benifit.

True. Didn't think of that.
