I had read that before but forgotten it! Thanks for the refresher.

But the bit, Bb-A-C-B nat, was very widely used later in all sorts of homage pieces to Bach, from Schuman and Listz to Arvo Part - over 400 according to some Bach scholars.

Wow! Never knew that at all. 400+ pieces. Good thing they weren't subject to the copyright laws on sampling, eh?

I just called the shop for more information, and now they say that the uke should ONLY be tuned in ADF#H :)

Neal tunes a lot of his ukes in H, especially his tenors. I tried it once, but I can't sing an H, so I went up to J and things are fine.
I'm sure you can't mean me, as I tune my tenors in G double sharp.  However my singing key is H natural with a spritz.

Ok so just an update on the original question about string tension/tuning.

I have now gotten the "Tenor GCEA" strings. Guess what... When I tune them to GCEA, they are pretty darn tight as well !!

I almost couldnt get myself to tune them up so tight, afraid to break the poor little uke... If you just push the 1st string up to touch the second, you have to use quite a bit of force...

Is it something about the length about that particular ukulele (Lanikai LU-21T) or something ? or is this just the way it's meant to be... ?

Still not quite convinced :)

Tenors are going to have more tension than smaller sizes, if that's what you're used to.  Shouldn't be *really* tight though...

Are you using a string set designed for gCEA? (high g)

Tenors always have more string tension. The longer the scale, the more tension you'll have.

Yes, the strings say both "Tenor" and mention they should be tuned gCEA.

I've been playing with it now for a few hours, I actually think it is OK.

Thanks for your replies so far - including the historic facts, kinda interesting - here in Denmark we usually use H notation instead of B

Hi, just a tip if you're worried 'bout the tension on the instrument, or if you feel the strings are too tight to play comfortably. Get a set of Worth BL for soprano / concert. They're long enough and will have significantly lesser tension. It will affect the volume though. A bit anyway.

I use them on a tenor I built myself, since the soundboard turned out a bit too thin. Next one I build will have a stronger top and will be strung with Aquilas.

Good luck man.

Sven

geoffg wrote: Hi Guys

I've just bought a Tenor Banjo and was wondering if its feasible to swap round the 3rd and 4th strings and tune it to GCEA as is my grand daughter's Banjolele. Then maybe I could strum along with her and only need 3 chords!!:D

cheers

geoff:)

You could use the existing cgd'a' strings if you tuned it with a low C string, gce'a' (uke is usually g'c'e'a' or gc'e'a'.)  So the strings are at their proper pitches, except the lower two are swapped, exactly as you said, and the d' string is up a  tone to e'.  It should work for chording.  What would bend my head completely is trying to play a melody on it like that. For that I'd get a fresh string for the e' and use the d' string for c', so it would be like standard low 4th C tuning gc'e'a'. It would work fine, especially on one of those 17-fret short scale tenor banjos the Irish guys like.

I have a tenor banjo, and I tune it just like the "weird tuning" that started this thread:  f bb d' g'.
