(It's not acoustic)

Does anyone have any experience with this Concert electric Uke?  It doesn't look too traditional but its nice looking.  I'm wondering how it sounds plugged in.  The price is right....it's a Bugsgears by Eleuke.

I played it last year and it sounds good if plugged in with the right amp.   Personally, I like the RISAs - like the Risa Solid (wire guitar strings) and Risa Ellie.  (nylon strings)

I think I like the looks of that Risa better.  When I first posted, I thought the Bugsgears was also acoustic, which by looking at it I should have been able to see it's not.  I'm now going to take my time looking for acoustic-electric ukes in the Concert size.  There aren't a wealth of them out there it seems.  Lanikai and Kala have some, and Pono?, and KoAloha will add electronics to theirs if you want.  Reviews on all of them would be nice. :)

My apologies.  I did not read your first post that closely.  I think you are referring to built-in pickups, right?  If yes, then here's my response.   The bugsgear is an electric, but not acoustic.   Do you care whether the pick-ups have active (9v pre-amps) or passive (no 9v)?   Besides buying off-the-shelf, you can order a production uke and have them install a pickup at the factory.  I looked into this three years ago.  I bought my first uke in Hawaii and the store advised me that I can have any guitar store install a pickup.  He was wrong.  The guitar stores won't touch the uke, because it was too small to install a pickup - the soundhole is too small.

So, long story - I finally ordered a G-String tenor directly from the factory and had them install a fishman pickup (it's passive).  With musicguymic's suggestion, I use a "L.R. Baggs paracoustic pre-amp" and a Roland AC-60 amp.   Works great.  Thereafter, I ordered another one (concert) for my wife.   By the way, not many uke manufacturers will install a pickup in a concert uke.   I did not want to fudge with inserting a 9v battery through the soundhole.  Both ukes took about five months to receive.

My learning is it's easier to have a pickup installed when the uke is being built.  Another avenue is to ask musicguymic - he might be able to have a production uke installed with a MISI.  MISI''s are active pickups which can be charged for 8 hours without a 9v battery.

Here's some of the acoustic ukes that I've tested:  (1) Applause (2) Lanikai CK-TEQ  Both have pre-amps installed (9v).  The Applause Ovation has the 9v installed in the back of the uke - which is easier to get to.  And it sounds great.   The Lanikai has the battery installed in the soundbox - so access is through the soundhole.  You will have to loosen the strings.

For an acoustic/electric uke, I think the Tululele by Earnest Instruments is a great option.  That's pretty much a custom level instrument at a production instrument price, and Joel Eckhaus has great reputation as a luthier.  I've never played one, but if I was in the market for a concert w/pickup, I would strogly consider one of those.  The only hang up is probably the styling.  If you don't like the Telecaster styling (and I'm not a big fan), then that's an issue.  If their LaPaula was the same or close to the same price as the Tululele, I would own one already.

I agree.  The LaPaula is twice the price as the Tululele.  I like the brown LaPaula style the best, and like you, if the price was closer to the Tululele, I'd already have one too. Can they both be played without plugging them in (acoustic).

Ponos are available with a passive pickup installed for a modest fee over the acoustic model. I don't find the pickup affects the tone on my Pono tenor in any way, and I play it acoustic 90% of the time. For amping, best to go through an external pre (mine is a Dean Markey). Very true and lovely uke sound. (Though, through a Vox DA-5 amp, you can also get some very funky sounds... :) )

Interesting information on the Tulele and La Paulas.  I have tested a Kala several years ago and they were okay - not exceptional - basically, it did not sing to my ears.  LOL.   I have not tested the Tulele or La Paula.  However, I think the Pono sounded better than the Kala.  Have not played the Kala baritone model or a Kala with an active shadow pickup yet.  The 'active' means the pre-amp is installed and probably powered with a 9 volt battery.

With MGM, I think he has a guarantee where if you are not satisified, you can return it.  Not sure on the details.  He's very reputable.  Maybe MGM can play it over the phone for you.  He can play several licks.

Oh, I thought it was the latest in Ukulelia.  Now I'm all disappointed. :?

I saw a typo on one of your auctions last night and almost started a thread on it because it was so funny.  I love your typos.  The one last night though...I actually did laugh, and if I can find it again I'll put it on this thread.  I think you'd be proud of it.  Just like I'm proud of pointing out other people's mistakes.  I think it's a rare God-given gift. :D
