the A string on my uke rattles whenever i strum it, and i think it's gotten worse because it doesn't play the right nore when i hold down the first fret... it just makes a buzzing noise. I have a Lanikai LU-21 standard uke. does anyone have a solution to either problem?

Hi mouse, could it be the action is to low? Then you would have to adjust the bridge, either by making a new saddle, or put a shim under your old one. Depends on how the saddle is made on your uke. Tampering with saddles can affect intonation though, but a buzzing uke isn't any fun. Go ahead and try a shim, or take it to a shop that can fix it for you.

edit: it could of course be a single fret, or a couple of frets, that are to high. But that should affect the other strings as well. Put a ruler on the frets and check; they should be the same height.

Good luck / Sven

Could be a problem at the nut or the bridge. Either may be too low, although it sounds more like the bridge end.

I don't know about your uke, but on my guitars and ukes, I can remove the saddle and adjust its height, by either sanding it down or placing a TEENSY spot of glue at one end to raise it. This isn't hard, but you might want to look online for luthier advice before you undertake any work.

Or simply take it into a good guitar shop and ask for help. It may cost you a bit, but it doesn't sound terminal.
