The standard Martin uke strings (Soprano) say that they are for BF#DA, however, most of us use GCEA. Can these specific Martins be used as GCEA tuned strings? Does Martin make any specifically for GCEA? Also, how do these rate versus, e.g., Aquilas?

Does Martin make any specifically for GCEA? Soprano ukuleles may be tuned ADF#B or GCEA, and so can those Martin strings. The higher tuning was more common during the past (and is currently popular in Canada), but most ukes are tuned to GCEA (and the vast majority of uke music books favor the GCEA tuning). I think Aquila Nylgut strings, which are made out of a proprietary polymer that is denser than nylon and sounds like natural gut strings, sound better than nylon strings.

Thanks Will. I find it curious that Martin continues to advertise the Soprano strings for ADF#B tuning when most of us these days go with GCEA. Most other manufacturers seem to recognize this shift to GCEA. Is Martin in a time warp?

The tuning label for the strings is probably not a significant designation; their strings perform equally well in both tunings. C.F. Martin certainly has a long historical tie to the ukulele; they were there when the first uke craze hit the mainland U.S. at the 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. The ukulele kept C.F. Martin in business during the 1920's; during some years, their ukes outsold their guitars: http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/History/Martin/MartinUkes/martinukes.html Last edited on Wed Jan 30th, 2008 11:15 pm by Will ____________________ Will http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/297/ Loose Change & Friends http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/245/ http://loosechangeandfriends.com The Earth Tones http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/337/ A Bunch Of Coconuts http://abunchofcoconuts.com |
