Hey everyone, I just got my first soprano the other day, and now I need something to keep it protected. I attempted to make my own gig bag out of an old pair of jeans, and although I think it will do for now I would like something better. Not to mention that I plan on getting a better uke soon enough so I had better have a nice bag or hard case ready.
So I would like some opinions about what you all use, whether you tend to take your uke with you all over the place or just have a home for it regardless. I plan on taking it to work with me on occasion to aleviate boring moments, and give me something to do on breaks. I'm thinking a hard case would be nice, but a nice gig bag with a shoulder strap might be better. Opinions?

Pretty much a personal choice, I'd say. Ukes are small instruments and the tend to get damaged easier, so I would have a hard case. There are several good ones out there on the market. The best deal for the money on the  market can be found here; http://jumpingflea.com/cases.cfm. Gig bags, as long as they are padded, work well too, but we are not talking about much difference in price or weight, so go with the case. Your uke will love you for it:uke:

I agree, a hard case is better.

But...  My Akulele came with a padded gig bag made of a bright colored wool like fabric with woven-in patterns from Bolivia.  I love it, cross my fingers, and use it.  Black hardcases are b-o-r-ing.

To clarify, I frequently take my ukes out of the house, usually in boring black cases, but the Akulele travels in its bright bag.

If you buy a hard case pay attention to the width sizing at the head.  My soprano ukulele has geared tuners that stick out to the sides (like guitars), but many cases seem to be sized for friction-style tuners and are therefore too narrow for geared tuners.  This is probably less of an issue with gig bags that have a bit more room.  Just something to look out for.

here's the best price i've found for hardshell gigbags, which are my preference.

:bluelight:

$33 incl shipping is pretty hard to beat. it's for all sizes, too. i just ordered a couple of each size.

The case Uke Jackson pointed out looks a lot like one I go for my Flukoa. I had to get a tenor>baritone size to fit my Fluke body shape.
None the less, it is a great case, and looks everybit like a Protec that ususally sells for $70.

Thought I'd show you all a few pics of my new uke (I'm pretty happy with it even though it's a $20 cheapie) and the little gigbag of sorts I made for it. All it took to make the bag was the leg of an old pair of jeans, the velcro from a broken pair of sandals and a lot of sewing. I think it turned out quite well!

I have decided that I am going for a hard case type, thanks for all of your suggestions!

Hey Shigthenewt,
I've got one just like that on my wall. It has a Kay decal on it. It was my first Uke. These are probably made by one company and sold to a bunch of companies. I am a little bit miffed. I paid $35.00 for mine. All in all it is a very good little uke even for $35.00. Through experimenting with strings you can change the sound of these guys a lot but If you like the way it sounds now don't mess with it. I like the black Hilo myself. That may be what is on it. Nice little bag you made. It looks like you are having fun. That's what it's all about. What is your screen name all about?

I have three types of cases, depending on where I go/what I'm doing with my ukulele.

I have a soft gig bag that I strap on my backpack when I go on week-long treks or when I want an easy-to-carry option. When I fly, I use a Gator hardshell case; this is *very* hardshelled plastic (or whatever!) case that I can use even in the overhead compartments and I don't worry about what overlaoded, wheeled suitcase is thrown on top of it (it's pretty indestructible). At ukulele festivals I use the foam/Cordura/hardshell case that came with my LoPrinzi soprano. It has a big red LoPrinzi logo stitched on it so I'm a little leery of carrying it because I figure folks'll feel I should be a beter player if I have a LoPrinzi, but the payoff is a lot of people see it, ask about it, and get to play an ukulele they may have only read about before. I like sharing!

Note: The LoPrinzi formed case is sturdy--it's constructed similar to the Hohner ones listed above by Uke Jackson, but I can tell you from experience that these *can* get a bit crushed at the edges in overhead bins on airplanes so be forewarned. For downright hardiness, I suggest the Gator cases.

Has anybody been able to order from UJ's link above?  I keep getting fatal errors and a message saying that the case can't be found.  Do you think they got flooded with orders and had to switch things up?

UPDATE: I went into it another way by clicking on the ukulele section, going to Lanikai ukes and then adding the case to my basket.  Thanks for the link UJ.

I am having fun, and learning alot in the process. My screen name has evolved considerably over the years, and it started out as a funny typo combined with an old screen name from back in my IRC days. I didn't realize until later that it had more subtextual meaning than I had originally intended. I will say that before it was ShigTheNewt, it was ShigNewton, whether or not that means anything to you. By the way, Shig is not my real name.

Does that Hohner case have enough room at the head for old-style wood friction pegs?  I don't have my uke with me so I can't provide a measurement, but they're not as long as the body is deep-if that makes sense.

I made my own gig bag, but I wish I had put more thought and planning into it and padded it out like, at all. It's pretty enough, but my uke's lookin' a little frazzled these days.
