You have endless possibilities.

Youtube is full of ukulele players covering everything from alternative to R&B music.

Name some modern songs you like and I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction to find the tab for the songs.

Was not sure if you were looking for a song to teach as a uke lesson, or a sing-a-long? Seems like you can't go wrong with a Beatles song, most kids seem to know the words. Something like Yellow Submarine where chords and words are available on Chordie, Jimmy Buffett songs are also fun.

Hi just about the most successful modern song for me at the moment has to be Valerie by the ZUTONS covered by Ami Whinehouse.

The chords are straight forward enough and the rhythm is really engaging.

Chords  Verse and refrain  C C C C / C C C C / Dm Dm Dm Dm / Dm Dm Dm Dm   x4 try to get a little semitone slide up to the chords to add texture

Middle 8

F F F F / Em Em Em Em / F F F F / Em Em Em Em / F F F F / Em Em Em Em / G G G G / G7 G7 G7 G7 /back to that C---Dm refrain

Ok I've not tried this on the Uke but its great on guitar and your young students should love the groove of it once they find it.

Hope you enjoy it

Hey There Delilah is modern, polular, and easy to play. I would guess all the 7th graders know it.
