Just pulled the trigger on a Kiwaya KTS-5.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250202041705&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching

Basically a 17 fret style O clone.

Just couldn't justify the blinged out KTS-7. ;-)

Can't wait to try it out.

Cheers,
Chris

Good choice!  You had better let us know what you think when you recieve it.

I've been thinking about ukes and what draws someone to a certain style.  Some like the Island look, some like the Mainland.  Some love the 12 fret look, some the 17.  Then theres the ornamentation factor, bindings, etc..

The styling of the Kamaka, G-string, Kelii, are all decidedly Island to me, not like the first ukes with the level fretboard, but Island nonetheless.
The sound and playability some would argue is also different, but no different than one brand from another.  So quality ukes boil down to 'the look'.

Me? I like the classic looks of Gibson, Martin, and what some of the other builders have out there, like Kiwaya.  Don't care as much for the look of Kamaka, G-String, Kelii, etc.. so, I gravitate towards builders like Kiwaya, Martin, Gibson, you know..

I  think that uke will compliment your AJ very nicely.

I totally agree... I really do prefer the Martin look over the "island" style ukes. I also prefer the more subtle look of the mahogany over the koa on ukes like the G-String.

What clinched it for me was a review of that KTS-7 you linked to. A guy on the UMGF forum bought it and was just raving about it.

Can't wait!

Cheers,
Chris

I'm a wood freak. I love wild wood grains. While the Kiwaya KTS-5 looks like (and IS) an awesome uke, it's just too "neat" for my taste. Just visually. Even a cheap pump pellet gun I own (Crossman 1377)... I've put a set of cool zebrawood grips on.

Something about the artistic chaos of nature just gets me. Like looking at the Grand Canyon. With a little cheap faux abalone to top it off as well.

Maybe Dr. Phil will do a show on it?

:D

I can completely understand that Tom.  I love nicley figured mahogany, mahogany that looks like fiddleback maple.  I had a Glyph soprano that was made of the most 3D myrtle I'd ever seen, you could look at it in the light and imagine yourself on the desert with the dunes.... sounded great, to boot.

But a new love of mine right now is some completely plain straight grain on a Gibson style 3.  I just can't put that down, and it's equally as interesting to look at, maybe the history, Idunno.

For me it is guitar and wood dependant. I like fairly straight grained mahogany.

However I love nice flamey maple. I also kind of like a bit of bearclaw on a spruce-topped acoustic.

Check out my G&L L-2500 that I custom ordered in 2006...

Beautiful bass! Just awesome.

Checked out the Glyph ukes as well. If they sound half as good as they look, I can easily understand why folks pay the price. Really, a bargain, considering the skill and time involved.

I've played a Glyph and if I was going to order a custom, Dave Means would be my first choice.   I played Dominator's Glyph tenor two years ago.   I would also contact Dominator.   He's building some really nice ukes.

Just received my Koa Pili Koko soprano.

I LOVE IT!

Minor bitch: it was advertised as having Worth CL's, but has Hilo blacks.

I DON'T CARE.

What an awesome uke!

Thanks, Michael!

I think Shirley Orlando at Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach carries Worth's.

Shirley has all the brands. A very nice woman BTW.

I think I'll keep the Hilos on for a while. The intonation was off (maybe from the flight to the mainland) but I loosened the strings and flipped the saddle around, and it's damn close now, if not perfect. Really loud and woody tone, for a soprano. I'm finding myself strumming it with my fingers, instead of a pick. I love this uke!

I think, coming from my guitar player's way of thinking, this soprano is waking the "Uke God" in me. Can't describe it, but I think folks know what I mean.

Man, somehow missed that one before. Great job, John, audio and video.

Hope you told Mr. Coulton about it. I'm positive he'd love to see it.

Yeah, JoCo has seen the vid. I think he thought it was OK. I assume you're talking about this one with all the TC movies cut in:

What I mean is that I can't play this uke with a pick. It just lends itself to fingerpicking. It's so delicate, and sweet.

Another door has been opened, for this old blues guitar player...

Hmmm... I think I forgot to post pics here! :D

My new Kiwaya KTS-5. It's a real sweetie! It has a little belly, but she seems stable, so my initial worry is dissapating.

On to the pics...
