Just wondered if there could be a process to quicken the Learning of a song to be played on the ukulele. Probably a stupid question since the most common answer is probably to keep playing it until it is memorized. Wondered if others have found the most effective method. Perhaps associating the notes and chords to the words works the best? I seem to mindlessly just keep playing it over and over until the magic happens.

I try to break down the songs into sections and try each of them a little bit to determine the difficulty of each section. I usually would start learning the easiest section, which is not always the first section. Once I get a section down, I move to another section. When I can reasonably play each section, I try to tie it all together. I also try to listen to the music (iTunes downloads are great for this) a lot so I know how it goes very well. It's a lot easier to learn stuff if you know what it sounds like. Yes, repeated playing helps. If you practice enough, eventually you'll get it down. Edit: By the way, this is what I do for instrumentals such as stuff found on Dominator's website (currently I'm working on "In My Life" this way). I'm not sure this is what I'd do if I try to learn chords for singing accompaniment. Thanks, Funny thing is that I would have never thought of learning a few easy parts first instead of just plowing through from the beginning. It is a good idea, then when you get the beginning down you run into some of the parts you have already learned.

Thanks for bring this post forward. I hadn't found it yet in my reading back. I also hadn't ever thought about the process of learning songs, which, if you knew how much I worked on teaching methods, would seem surprising. Like ArtCrocker, I usually just start at the begining and keep going through it until I get to the end. Thinking about it now, I realise that sometimes I set aside the more difficult changes and work on them separately. I even made up a simple tune by putting a C chord in front of one tricky fingering so I could practice it separately. Of course what's tricky for me is probably easy for someone else. Words help me. Instrumentals are hard for me to memorize. Maybe I should make words for the Instrumentals...
