So now that I have been playing a little while (about a month), I was thinking about trying to find someone to sit with and make sure that  (other than making sure I have the strings facing out) I wasnt developing any habits that would be a detriment to my continiued Uke progression, but alas in Kansas City there is no listing for Ukulele Schools, any suggestions?

Thanks,

Doug Brown

Hi Doug,

I wouldn't worry too much about getting any unbreakable habits because you're learning on your own. Try to learn from a variety of sources (websites, books, videos, etc.) and learn some songs and the chords that are used in the songs.

Be sure to get an electronic tuner and learn to use it and keep your uke tuned correctly. They'll show you how to use it in a music store when you buy it.

Another important thing is to develop good timing. That takes a while but is essential for becoming a good player.

With your uke tuned correctly and you playing the right chords with decent timing that's most of what you need, with or without a teacher.

You could also call different music stores around KC and see if any of them have a uke teacher. It's a big town so there's a possibility. Also, sign the uke player directory on Jim Beloff's site and let it be know there you're looking for a teacher. I took a look and didn't see any players from Kansas City but there are a couple from Kansas and some in Missouri. Here's the address of the player directory...

Good luck...

Richard

Wow,  one of the teachers is from Overland Park which is just up the street from me (suburb of KC),  and I did get a tuner, boy that sure makes a diffrence.

Thanks a lot,
