Does anyone know anything about the ukulele kit from Grizzly?

http://www.grizzly.com/products/H3125

MAKE magazine did a blurb about it, and it looks easy enough to put together (and inexpensive). I know not to expect zillion dollar sound (fortunately I only know half-a-dozen chords and can't make zillion dollar sound anyway).

My thought is that for 25 dollars (+ shipping and glue) I can't go wrong, but if it sounds like a 25 dollar uke then I sort of would be going wrong. On the other hand... if I suck when I play I can always blame the ukulele.

It looks fun, and I'll probably buy it just for the "cool factor" of rolling my own (sort of). Are there better kits?

Check out "The Dominator's" website on the Grizzly kit.    You can e-mail him and he'll be able to assist.

Good luck!

Oops...I forgot to provide to you his main website.  Dominator is a great guy...he's also a very talented uke player.  If you attend the major uke festivals, he's usually there.   I saw him perform in an informal jam session last year.

Heh!
I wanted to take a look at the kits from Grizzly, but all I could find on their site was stuff for their tools.
That uke kit looks like the body is already assembled, so all you do is screw on the neck, string it up and play. Right?

I have read about Grizzly kits on some other sites, but never looked at any. Didn't StewMac used to sell them?

Hey,
I don't know if I'm gonna have much positive stuff to say...but that's what studying all day will do to you.

I ordered a Grizzly uke kit about a year ago. I built a Grizzly kit about 6 months ago. You can see how long the backordering took. They kept on promising "Next Month..." and finally it did come...after I had taken matters into my own hands and made a cigar box uke.

When it came, it looked good enough. The body is not the traditional figure 8 shape, but dreadnaught (sp?). The laminate body shines up real purty with Tru-Oil gun stock finish. All in all, a fun project with something cool to hang on your wall, but I will say that I haven't played mine since the day I finished it. For a hobbyist who is used to a challenge, I warn that this project does not present much of a challenge. Since everything is already assembled, all it took was a ruler and some glue.

If I had it to do all over again, I would definitly make my own fretboard. The intonation is horrendous, and it makes the whole project look cheap. This adds a little bit more of a challenge to the project. Oh, and maybe some inlay.

But, for 25 bones, it's hard to say no. I say do it, and learn some valuable lessons in the process.

I actually have thought of going the cigar box route as well. I found a cool link at cigarbox guitars with a set of 90 year old plans that are worth reading just for the fun of finding that, "The one-string banjo, the cigar box guitar, and similar vaudeville favorites are giving way to the tantalizing ukulele, and the home mecahnic, to be up to date in his musical craftsmanship, must fall in line. "

http://www.cigarboxguitars.com/PDF/cb_uke_plans.pdf

I suspect it is going to come down to the "it is only 25 clams" argument in a day or two. I also suspect that my expecations might not be as high--my current (and only) ukulele is a Jenny echo.

side note: I have ordered stuff from grizzly in the past, and didn't have your backorder nightmare (I don't know that I would have had your patience)

So, where do you find the kits on the Grizzley site?

:2banjo: I plan on living forever. So far, so good.

Hey Brad,  Look up the web site and on the search block type in ukulele and it should show up, They have kits for all kinds of string instruments.

I have put 2 togeather and one of them I made a new finger board out of rose wood and good frets on it and it looked good, but not very loud.  The other one I tried to put binding on the body and messed it up because of the laminate wood, So I took the neck and made a cigar box ukulele out of it and it sounded real good.

they will send you a catalog if you request it.   http://www.grizzly.com

There's a better kit here: http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=5506 and there's a couple places where people have posted their step-by-step progress at building one but I can only find one link right now: http://www.carrotcreek.com/ukulele/ukulele_draft.htm

This kit is $99 but comes with solid wood instead of plywood and many more chances to improve one and/or customize your end product.

These look even nicer than the Grizzly. A bit more, but...

Okay, now I know what I have to do.

I need to write to each of the manufacturers and explain that I am writing a product comparison of ukulele kits for eZfolk, the permire folk site on the world wide web, and that if they will send me a sample of their kit I would be glad to include it in the review.

The best kit will obviously be the UK Ukes one. I'm considering that over a brand new uke for the summer.

Sure a lot cheaper than one that nice--in materials--but will be a lot of prep equipment to get.

As for the Woodcraft that Hobbit mentions above, I spoke with their customer service, and it's denitiely a solid wood kit. (But the guy said it's pretty thin...I said that's a good thing!)

Hey UkeForever,

I missed the information on teh UK uke kits. I saw your post,

"The best kit will obviously be the UK Ukes one. I'm considering that over a brand new uke for the summer.
Sure a lot cheaper than one that nice--in materials--but will be a lot of prep equipment to get. "

Can you tell me more about that, or better yet direct me to a web site.

Do they offer tenor kits?

Mark

Hi Strummers,

Wanted to give you my two cents on teh Grizzly kits. They suck.

Construction/materials wise it is junk in every respect. I have gotten ito building, and I wanted to test a new top configuration, and instead of trying it out on the koa cutaway sides I had made up, I ordered one of the kits...for testing purposes.

I routed off the crappy plywood top, added my own kerfing, tehn added my own top.

I was testing a radiused curly redwood top with a Kasha tone bar system, as well as a number of other sound hole atributes that I will not go into now.

With the new top as I built it, it cranks out a lot of volume and beautiful tone. Much deeper as well. I also added cocbola edge binding , a radiused cocobola fret board, upgraded mandolin frets, cocobola head stock veneer, and a custom shaped cocobola Kasha style bridge, and Grover fricton pegs. Now it's a beauti and sounds great too. Without the top change, it wouldn't.

If you are willing to put in the time and experience, you can make a silk purse out of a sows ear...BUT the UK Ukes look like a much better starting point.

Spend the money on the UK Uke if you want to get a real introduction in building, or some other well crafted finished model.

Spank that uke!

lark in the morning, an outfit in ca has kits too. i have built several. the bodies are assembled and the fretboard is made up for you using a formica like laminate. the finnish pretty nicely witha little work. i believe they were $19.95 or so. the mosst important thing in getting a good uke from this kit is positioning the fret board properly. you get an instrument thats a little better then the hilo beginer instrument. and if you work at it a little you can add custom touches and make a pretty good little uke out of it. use better tuners and such.

i have several ukes i've bought from ebay , a banjo uke, a nice uke from the 20's with some real nice inlay work on it.

one of the things ive discovered is you can't have just one uke. your instantly a collector.

Though the Grizzley kits are dogs, I wnat to share some pictures of what can be done with one. I removed the top and replaced it with a radiused curly redwood and a lot of other modifications. The only thing stock on it are the side, teh back and teh neck. The purpose of the build was to test a tone bar system and top configuration.

Those UK Uke kits are quite interesting - I'll have to keep them in mind if I ever decide to build one!
