Without knowing what style you play (BG or Clawhammer or 2-finger), I'll toss out a couple of OT suggestions.
1. Get a computer program that allows you to slow down tunes (Amazing Slowdowner, Transcribe!, and/or I think Audacity can do it, too.). There are many.
2. Find a tune you want to learn (hopefully a banjo-only cut, or maybe banjo/fiddle or banjo/guitar.
3. Listen to the tune until you can whistle/hum/sing it - you need to know the tune.
4 Figure out the tuning, match your banjo to it, and loop the tune in sections while you try to match the notes on your banjo.
Keep it up until you have the tune under your fingers. I actually work with a slow-down program, my banjo in my lap and Tabledit up in a separate window on my computer, so I can tab it out as I figure it out. That way, I already have a fall-back for later when I need to remember/refresh my memory of it.
Good luck!
Brad

Brad has given some great practical steps. I say listen, listen, and then listen some more. The fact is that we learn to speak long before we learn to read so learning to mimick sound seems to be innate. So I'll say again, listen, listen, and then listen some more. Then find where those sounds live on your instrument.
Peace,
Ed
