Last month I had the awesome opportunity to play with Son Del Centro, a "son jarocho" group that plays folk music from the Veracruz region of Mexico. I had a great time playing ukulele along with the very similar jarana, but one thing got in the way of perfect jamming. The way they referred to chords wasn't "A, Bb, C#, etc", it appeared that chords were identified as "Do, Re, Mi, etc." I was able to identify chords by the shapes, but I am very interested to learn how chords are referred to in latin music, or more accurately, in the spanish language. If anyone has any knowledge or links to articles, it'd be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Oddjob. Just my two Cents here. Notes (and Chords) in Spanish (and English) Do (C) Re (D) Mi (E) Fa (F) Sol (G) La (A) Si (B) Diesis (Sharp) Bemol (Flat) That is a start, I think! Keep on Strumming! Last edited on Tue Apr 15th, 2008 08:23 am by Tani |

Hi!, I am from Mexico city, the music from Veracruz is exellent!!, the notes that posted are right, I didn´t know that in other countries do, re, mi, fa, sol, la and si aren´t used, but I dont´t know what is a "diesis" I think you refer to "sostenido" #?

Hi Zabulus! Thank you for your remark. I think I mixed up Spanish and Italian, where the words for "flat" and "sharp" are "bemolle" and "diesis". The names of the notes are the same. Apologies for the stupid mistake. All the Best! Tani

Yeah, I think it is only in the English-speaking world that the letter names are preferred to good ol' "do-re-mi." You guys are the ones who are "with it," not us.
