Can anyone help me to find out where I can get a new or used Gretsch Historic Series Resonator please ? I have read the reviews of it at http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Data4/Gretsch/Historic_Series_Resonator-01.html
and one of the reviewers states that he bought a new one in 1999 (presumably in the USA) . I live in N.E England and would dearly love to get my hands on one of these. I've tried the Gretchguitars website but cannot find it in their catalogue. I've also searched Fender.co.uk as they are the U.K dealers for Gretsch guitars but cannot find any mention of it there either.
I would love to hear from anyone who has one of these resonators to sell or who can point me in the direction of a dealer who has a used one for sale. I cannot even find a picture of one on the internet.                                                                            If I cannot find one of these, I will probably go for an Amistar which are fairly easy to get hold of and are supposed to be well built and not too expensive. I've got about £500.00 to spend and I've seen an advertisement for a new Amistar which has been reduced from £800 odd to £500. I am planning on paying a visit to the London Resonator Centre where I can try a few and see which I like the best. The trouble with living in the North East is that most guitar shops only stock the odd Resonator and there are lot of cheap inferior guitars which I am not interested in buying. I've played a few already and the only one I liked was a square necked Dean for £379 which was for sale in Windows in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne but it was for slide playing only due to the very high action.  I play fingerstyle country-blues with the occasional use of a slide and lately I've discovered the music of Josh Graves, Mike Auldridge, Jerry Douglas & Bob Ickes. My main influences are John Fahey, Leo Kottke & Stefan Grossman from the early Seventies and there are some great British folk artists whom I also admire. I think I'd prefer a Tricone with heavy-gauge strings rather than a single cone, due to sweeter tone as my style leans more towards American country-blues than to Robert Johnson, although I do play some Bukka White, Son House, Rev Gary Davis, Willie Brown & Willie Johnson. Of course they couldn't afford expensive guitars and if I just wanted to get close to their sound, I'd buy a cheap metal-bodied resonator and record myself playing in the bathroom.

If you're looking for the mid-price range resonators (I'd stay away from the really cheap ones) it seems that Dean and Johnson pretty much have that covered.  They both make spider and biscuit, and Johnson makes a tricone.  Both make wood and metal body.

I have a wooden bodied, round neck (for fretting and sliding), biscuit bridge, Dean with built in pick up and like it pretty well.

What most folks that are serious about this do is buy either the Dean or Johnson and then replace the cone, biscuit and saddle with a National cone.  This really improves the sound and changing out the saddle/biscuit allows you to set the action to your own preferrence.

There have been several extended discussions on the Big Road Blues forum about this upgrade proceedure, and others specific to tricones.

Of course, deciding whether you want metal or wood, tricone, biscuit or spider depends on what kind of sound you are looking for.  Going with Dean or Johnson and upgrading will just about allow you to have one of each for the price of one National.

Hope this helps.
