I own a Maya Les Paul Standard Copy. I purchased it new in 1972 in Germany, from a dealer "Gaul und Wilczek".

I don't remember what I paid for it. It has 22 Frets is Black and White with Gold pick-ups. 10 of the frets have rectangle inlays and a diamond shaped inlay under the Maya name on the Neck. The neck plate on the back is also Gold and has Made in Japan stamped on it.

Played many  a gig in the Northrhein Westfalia and Niedersachsen (Hanover) area for 10 years and this guitar served me very well. The volume knobs have a tendency to loosen, but the neck was very stable and easy to play. I had a Gibson and a Fender Strat, but the only guitar that I have kept all these years has been the Maya.

I'd like to thank docpear for the info on Maya instruments and the link to the article. It's answered a lot of questions!

Back in 1972-1973, I was in a folk group called "Silversleeves" who worked the North London folk scene. My mandolin was a DiMeglio bowlback and too precious to take to some of these dives, so I went looking for a substitute.

In the old Macari store on Charing Cross Road, I came across a nice flatback for about £100 - a week's wages, then. It was a Maya "Artist" and it's sitting on its stand, as I type this! Stamped into the central brace is the message "MADE BY TAHARA" (not "Mr."!). The tailpiece has a rather Japanese-style "T" stamped on it.

It's a nice instrument to play, but the bass response is its strongest feature - could be my technique.

Stratman,

If you want to hear some great Electric guitar on EZFolk, check out Chris Pearline from France.  He has a webpage here with Mp3's and several videos of him playing.  He can play some mean electric slide and blues as well as great acoustic music.  He is also a very generous man who posts his own song for anyone who wants to pplay them.

Hello,

Can somebody tell me what the value of a maya mandolin( a Martin a copy) is.

He is like new, never played, but thirty years old, he has a indian rosewood back.

Its real wood or veneer?

How does it play?

Thanks

Walter

Hello to all

I tried to fix the links to the article on Tahara, but am not sure my repair job will work, so here are the new links again:

I have a Maya acoustic model 3281 with another number on the id, J0906.

I bought it second hand a few years ago for £50 (around $100 US).

i'd never heard of them and I've been playing for forty odd years. Like you, I've had to lower the tuning as I find the action a wee bit high, but the tone is tremendous. I've always played with Picato Ultra light strings (for about 30 odd years) but the last time i was in the shop, I could only get Elixir and I don't like them. Seems that evertime I try something different from Picato, I regret it.

I've a few other guitars, all acoustic except one Telecaster copy I bought 3 years ago after saying in 66 that just because Bob Dylan went electric didn't mean I was going to! I've a few Yamahas, six, twelve and classical and a Fender acoustic and a few other assorted things of no real note but all with their own character.

Hey, Walter,

Any luck with that valuation? I want to sell my Artist mandolin and a Fender Mandocaster and a hand-built Appalachian dulcimer and I need all the ideas I can get!

Hi, Walter.

Thanks for the reply.

For the Maya Artist, I am looking for 350 euros, or £250 UK pounds. It is an 'A'-style instrument, unmarked and in a hard case.

For the Fender, 175 euros or £125 UK pounds. It's a 4-string, without a case. We can discuss prices further, if you are interested! I accept PayPal.

Let me have your email address and I will post you some photos of them.

Best wishes

Adrian

After playing a ukulele for a while I wanted to learn to play tango songs on a classical guitar. I found a Maya CK 114 B  WO 20380 with some new strings on craigs list for $100. this list of facts on Maya was good for background investigation on the price of instruments. This guitar is in like new condition and sounds OK .

Thanks
