What do most of you guys do when fingerpicking, concerning the ring and pinky fingers of your right hand? Do you plant them on the pickguard for stability? I am able to plant my pinky firmly, but my ring finger seems to have a mind of its own, and kind of follows my index and middle fingers when I pick. Are there ways to train it to remain stationary like the pinky? Homer.

I leave both my ring finger and pinky planted when fingerpicking the guitar and uke and bluegrass banjo. Back when I used to teach a lot I would emphasize doing that but a lot of people had trouble with it, especially the ring finger. I think it's helpful, but on the other hand I've seen a lot of great players that don't anchor either of those fingers so I guess it just depends on what works for you. There are also a lot of people who use the ring finger to pick with, so if they do any anchoring it's with only the pinky. I'm strictly a 3-finger picker (thumb-index-middle), which I think is probably the most common, especially with bluegrass banjo players and acoustic blues guitarists, doncha think?

Yeah, I think the four finger style is kinda of the classical guitar influence. I'm like you, I prefer the three finger style. All the authentic guys I've seen over the years used the three finger style. I remember seeing Brownie McGhee many years ago. He was one of the first that I ever saw play the three finger style. Homer- On my guitar, I tend to leave the pinky anchored. Did it for so many years when I first started, even the classical guitar instructor in a group evening class in the 80's couldn't get me to take it away. I tend to use PIM for playing most folk stuff, and the A gets added in when I play chords, or classical. (And I read somewhere that classical guitar players are starting to use the pinky, too Luckily, I don't need to anchor anything for my clawhammer banjo. brad

I think, I'm not 100 percent sure but I think when I'm using three finger picking style I plant the pinky and ring finger on the wood next to the sound hole or the G and high E, when I pick with four fingers I can't seem to plant my pinky any where. I'll have tp pay closer attention as soon as I get a guitar in my hands tonight. Peace

I'm self taught (very much still in the process) and have comfortably settled into my ring finger taking on high e-string duty. My pinky remains totally welded to the pick guard. Thumb gets lowE A and D strings, leaving my index and middle for the G and B strings. I've recently began developing (by accident) a blues lead style that uses lots of fingerpicked double stops, making the ring finger very necessary. On a ukulele this works out perfect, as each finger gets it's own string with the pinky planted.![]() Last edited on Thu Nov 4th, 2004 09:49 pm by 1four5 ____________________ These are the good times! |

What you do in the picture, three finger and anchored pinky...there is no way I can do that. I use two fingers primarily, on a few tunes three....when using two I anchor and must anchor, but not with three...could it be because my hands are likely smaller than yours and using three if I anchor I can reach all the strings or something? everyone should do what works!!

You know that's a really good question, and I had to check to find out.
