I'm curious on what you're using for live sound performances.

I use acoustic steel and nylon string guitars with active PUs through a TA-50 Trace-Elliot acoustic amp made in the UK. It has a separate mic input for voice.

Problem is, that the TA-50 amp has poor power for outdoor performances.

I'm thinking of purchasing a more powerful active cabinet speaker to mic my amp and voice.

What's your experience and recommendation?

Greetings Dino,

I can't help you with the uke but for guitar I use a L.R. Baggs ribbon transducer through a L. R. DI into a Marshall 60 watt acoustic amp.  Plenty powerful for most situations both outside and in.

Peace,
Ed

Dino:

I use magnetic soundhole pickups for my guitars, and amplify through a PA system rather than a guitar amp, because I have always perfomed as part of a band, but I have never done a solo gig.  But, magnetic pickups don't work on nylon strings, so you can either have a piezo pickup installed in your uke, or use a separate condensor microphone to amplify the uke, and another microphone for your vocals.

Loose Change & Friends uses a Fender Passport PD-150 PA system with dual speaker cabinets and 2 mixers feeding into the Fender amp inputs (we have 7 band members, so we use a lot of inputs and mikes).  For other gigs with other bands, I use a Mainline "Boxer" (sold out last year at Music123.com) powered speaker and a 10-channel mixer. I have a second identical Mainline PA that I can pair up with the first one for larger rooms.

To upgrade your PA, you'll need to decide how portable you want your system to be.  There are 3 basic designs:  (1) full-fledged PA's with a powered mixer and 2 speaker cabinets (you can use just one speaker if you're cramped for space), (2) a compact all-in-one PA/powered speaker, and (3) a larger sized acoustic guitar amp that has separate microphone and instrument controls.  These 3 models probably give you the biggest bang for the buck:

Most powerful (80 watts, 2 speaker cabinets):

$269 - Squier 4 channel PA with 2 speaker cabinets

Most convenient:

$349 - Nady RPA-4 Roller PA (4 channels, 80 watts)

Most compact and affordable:

$180 - Behringer Ultracoustic ACX450 Acoustic Guitar Amplifier (45 watts, digital effects)

Thanks ejsant and Will for your help.

I'm a solo gig most of the time. What you've shown are some great options.

My goal is to be very portable and to have great sound for mainly outdoors. I'm thinking maybe a single speaker PA for voice and play but I don't want to sound tinny. I want my guitar to amplify its rich tones and warmth that an acoustic amp would.

Does the Marshall and Behringer have good vocal controls like reverb, delay, treble and bass? Did you guys sing through them?

The Nady looks very portable, with more functions and the ability to add on other devices.

Thanks again guys. I'll post what I finally decided to do,

Dino

Greetings Dino,

Aye, indeed I amplify my voice as well my guitar through the Marshall.  Various EQ controls between the DI Box (Baggs Para-Acoustic) and Amp are adequate enough.  I will say that the Baggs set up requires taking all the mids out of the guitar to remove the plinkety plink stuff.  Sans that I've no complaints and frankly I prefer it to the  Fishman set ups I've heard (just my preference, Fishman makes fine gear).  I've added a Behringer 15 watt amp as a powered monitor.  Again sufficient enough and seems durable as I usually gig between ten and fifteen times each month.

All the best!

Peace,
Ed
