How do you like your Fullerton Montclaire? I know it is worth $300, but is it worth that much more than the other Fullerton guitars you have purchased? How does it compare in quality to the Greenwich and the Brigantine?

I think the Montclaire is an excellent guitar, well worth the $300 price.  Solid wood guitars with Englemann spruce top, rosewood back and sides, hardwood binding, and real abalone trim would normally cost at least 3 to 4 times as much, or much more under an established brand name.  The Blueridge BR-70, a dreadnought I had an interest in, has a similar design but with laminated rosewood back and sides and now cost about $650.  I raised the string action of the Montclaire by shimming up the saddle by about 1/16" and it now plays very well without string buzz when picked.

The Brigantine and Greenwich were super-bargains, selling for a final blowout price of $100.   Due to the abnormal clearance price reductions, it probably isn't fair to compare prices of those models directly with the Montclaire.   For the $200 price difference, the Montclaire has solid rosewood back and sides, full real abalone trim, and hardwood binding.  You get the booming bass characteristic of the Montclaire rosewood dreadnought, the balanced tone of the Greenwich, and the less-boomy mahogany dreadnought sound of the Brigantine.  With just a bit of tweaking to set up the string action, all three are excellent guitars, certainly better than anything else at similar prices.

Maybe a better comparision would be between "normal" priced imported guitars.   Rosewood guitars, especially with solid back and sides, generally cost a good deal more than laminated rosewood models.  The price differential between a Blueridge BR-160 (solid rosewood @$790) vs. a BR-60 (laminated rosewood @$520) is substantial; even more so with abalone-trimmed models - Blueridge BR-180 ($1,200) vs. BR-70 ($710).

My friend Jeff who runs the local jam session is a Gibson guitar collector, and he has played some of my Fullertons, and he's very impressed by how they play and sound.

Hello Jack:

I will try to make a long story as short as possible.

I use to run a wholesale distribution company called NHF Musical that was owned my Music 123 (DBI).  (It was my company that I sold to them in 2003, we also were the exclusive US distributor of ARIA instruments).  Last summer they asked me to help them liquidate the inventory that was in excess as they were having cash flow problems.  I did this through a group of eBay sellers, I being one of them.  DBI went bankrupt and was sold to Guitar Center (Musician's Friend) last month.  The new owners dropped the price of all of the house brand items to blow them out (Fullerton is a house brand that I had developed, it was my name and they got it with my company's purchase.  You may remember that ARIA had FULLERTON models in the 1990's).  That is why you saw such a low price with free shipping all of a sudden.

This guitar was a nice instrument and I had sold over 100 of them since August, so a few days ago I bought the remaining 20 pieces.  That is why they are "sold out" and I still have them . . . and now you will have one too!

I have access to many items still in their inventory so if you need anything else let me know?

Regards,
Bob Young

Hi Bob,

Just curious what you can tell me about the guitar. Music123 had them marked down to $200 w/free shipping & sold out yesterday. Clearly, Fullerton was their house brand and no doubt all the Fullerton product is of Chinese origin. Personally, I've had very good luck with Chinese (even Indonesian & Maylasian) product. Just curious how you came to have these & any other interesting tidbits. I'm not a reseller, just a middle aged guitarist on a minor buying binge of low-priced product. There's a major seller of Washburn B-stock & damaged goods out of Waukeshau, WI whom I've bought from & am kind of friendly with. No ulterior motive here, just curious. If you're too busy to reply, I'll survive.

Thanks again,

Jack

Jack:

Thanks for the background story.  Enjoy your guitar.

-Will

Hey, do you guys know that they're selling Chinese-made (I think) guitars on ebay
with similar specs to the Fullertons for close to or a little more after shipping. For instance, there's a solid rosewood back and sides acoustic-electric for about
339 after shipping; factor in that it has electronics, and it's comparable.

There's lots of other models, jumbos, etc that have specs similar to a lot of the Fullertons, for just a little more than the Music123 blowout prices we've been looking at.  Do you suppose these are just as good? The feedback is 99% positive on the one seller who seems to be selling most of them (jj-lin).   The primary product name
seems to be "Gitano".

Do you suppose this suggests a flood of relatively inexpensive good quality guitars from the Far East is here or will be here in the near future, and does this means the blowout deals, while good, are not as good as they seem?  And this is not to denigrate the Fullertons and the blowout sale in any way, I bought three myself.   Just wondering.

Originally, prior to ordering the Fullertons, I was primarily looking for a jumbo body 12-string, but that eBay seller doesn't carry any 12-strings.

I generally don't buy off eBay if the same instruments can be purchased from an established on-line or mail order dealer.

It's been observed that many of the imported guitars from China are of very good quality, and a number of them are already selling under the labels of established brands such as Blueridge (virtually their entire line), Guild (the GAD line), Fender, Epiphone (Masterbilt line), etc.  When these guitars are available under a generic or house brand, they are often priced much lower.

I am looking to upgrade the saddle and pins on the Greenwich to either tusq or bone. Any recommendations? Also what size do I need. There appear to be two main sizes, Taylor and Martin. I imagine it is the Taylor size, but I am not sure.

Two years ago I mail ordered and installed a compensated bone saddle for my Martin dreadnought from Maury's Music for a very reasonable price.  I'm not sure what the size difference is between a Martin and a Taylor saddle.  Here's the URL:

Hey Will,

Do you know anything about the "Fullerton Elwood Pro Auditorium?" I've been wanting an auditorium size guitar for a while and that one was still available just now so I bought it. Retail was $700 and the Music123 price was $179 with free shipping so I thought it sounded like a good deal.

It's not too fancy but looks like good quality and it's solid wood. Here's the description...

The Fullerton Elwood is a finger pickers delight. A no nonsense all solid stain finished auditorium sized guitar, perfect for fingerpicking, blues or anyone wanting the great balance of a small body guitar. Solid spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides gives the Elwood a warm rich tone. The perfect back porch guitar.

Anyhoo, too late to back out now... just wanted to get some reinforcement from all the Fullerton fans.

Here's what it looks like...

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the suggested retail. Still, if it is anything like the Greenwich auditorium that I purchased, you should be very happy. The Greenwich has become my favorite guitar and I just purchased the case Will recommended for it.

Good luck.

Hi, Richard:

Based upon the quality of the Fullerton instruments I've received from Music123, the Elwood guitar should be a very nice instrument.  It has a solid spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides.  The body has the "mini-jumbo" shape rather than the traditional Martin-style 000 shape.   I'm not sure if this guitar will fit into a regular 000 hardshell case, but it should fit into a classical sized gig bag.

Will, I just received my Golden Gate case. What a great case and what a bargain at $50. Thanks for the tip. My Greenwich fits perfectly!

Looks like someone returned a Cumberland 12-string Jumbo, because they're now listing an open box one for 128.24 after 10% discount.  They had been all sold out.

Must have gone quick. I was too busy fightin' the flood yesterday to worry about guitars. By the time I saw this and looked it was gone. Though I do see a Crosswick there now that wasn't before. I'm of 2 minds on these returns. I mean, something was most likely wrong for it to be sent back. But then, maybe it was like my Elwood, when I got it - it was unplayable. I had to adjust the neck and shim the bridge up. You just don't know, were they returned for fixable setup problems or more serious issues? Then, again -for $90, you're not risking too much.

I purchased a return cumberland B stock. I was  somewhat apprehensive but  I gave it a shot. Not only was I pleased, But  my friend the luthier said that It was a good buy for the money. I changed the strings, am replacing the saddle and pins and installing a bridge doctor - not that it needed it but I can do this and have a good sounding and very playable 12 stringJUMBO for under $200. Bye the way, the soundboard was fine -flat, the bridge was not lifting and the neck was straight and fretboard was ok. I don't know why it was returned, But I'm glad that I have it.

I had ordered early in February during Music123.com's clearance sale and I purchased an "A-stock" Fullerton Cumberland jumbo 12-string for $100.  I took it to the local jam and 2 much more experienced guitar players (35-40 years) played it.  After commenting on the excellent tone and low action of the guitar, they were flabbergasted when they learned what the price was.  One of them told me "I had won the lottery."

The FW-35's 49.99 (before 10% discount) dreadnought in black was available yesterday for a brief shining momemt, but out of stock
again today; a B-stock Greenwich listing for $119.99 (before 10% discount)
also must have been even more briefly avaliable, but is also now out of stock.  Looks like some of the out-of-stock faves make brief comebacks sometimes, and you can grab 'em if you catch 'em...

Just spotted this!  There is a Fullerton Kingwood 6-string selling on eBay, with a final date of April 30, 2007:

FULLERTON MAN (sung to the tune of "Traveling Man" by Rick Nelson)

Parody lyrics by Will - ode to those with Guitar Acquisition Syndrome, inspired by Fullertonboy
http://members.aol.com/midman/travman.mid
(I've boldfaced the accented syllables to make it easier to sing)

I'm a Fullerton Man,
Collecting guitars, made from 'round the world.
And on many guitars I've bought, they've got
Fancy abalone and pearl.

Kingwood spruce and maple 12-string, lovely to see;
Has a loud sound, you know.
And I even own its 6-string brother, too
Plus the Cumberland jumbo.

Music123 had a big markdown;
New guitars, my heart did yearn.
Aquisition Syndrome; although it's wrong,
None did I return.

Dreadnought solid wood beauties, named Brigantine,
And Montclaire, sound so right.
Own enough to stock a band, but still bought to see
If the Greenwich sounded bright.

(instrumental break)

Music123 had a big markdown;
New guitars, my heart did yearn.
Aquisition Syndrome; although it's wrong,
None did I return.

Dreadnought solid wood beauties, named Brigantine,
And Montclaire, sound so right.
Own enough to stock a band, but still bought to see
If the Greenwich sounded bright.

Oh, I'm a Fullerton Man...
Yes, I'm a Fullerton Man...

:D
