So, has anyone "taken the plunge" and purchased a guitar off Ebay?  Indeed, it is tough to buy something as particular as a guitar without playing it.  In addition, the prevalence of "Ebay scams" is becoming a real problem. Until recently, I found myself only "window shopping" on ebay.  However, a couple weeks ago, I decided to make a purchase.  I bought an interesting handmade mahogany dreadnaught built by esteemed luthier Mike Lennon in 1975.  Mike opened the Apprentice Shop in Spring Hill Tenn. in 1976 and from 1994-1998 handbuilt the "Spring Hill series" of acoustic guitars for Fender.  They are very rare guitars and awesome if you get your hands on one.  Anyway, I am satisfied with my purchase and with a good setup it will prove a great and unique axe. Great conversation piece, so anyone else "taken the plunge"?

i bought several tenor guitars on ebay, and dozens of ukes -- with varying degrees of satisfaction. i once bought a guitar on yahoo auctions for $75 and turned around and sold it on ebay the next week for nearly $400 -- a real nice art deco stencil guitar from the 1930s, with a deco native american theme of all things.

i also sold a martin dreadnaught for $200 more than i purchased it for after playing the hell out of it for a year. i'm definitely a smaller guitar type of guy.

my feeling is that it's pretty much a gamble unless you have right of refusal. i'm now looking to buy a national steel guitar sometime this year, and know that i'll play it first. it won't be an ebay purchase. :bluelight:

I have bought one guitar and sole a banjo and guitar on eBay.

I still use the guitar (Sigma dreadnaught). It does not get as much playing since I bought my genuine Martin 00C-16RGTE. :D

I bought an old Ukulele banjo a couple of years back , used it for a year then sold it and made about 25% profit. I then bought a brand new banjo from a seller who at the time had a few on (Andybanjo) .This banjo was my first "new" instrument and I was suprised how much easier it was to play compared with some older cheaper banjo's.Anyway I am now looking at buying a guitar.

p.s I also bought 2 Maho ukulele's for £27 from Ebay, a week later the same seller was geting £40 each for them:talk:

Unfortunately, I do not have his contact info since he moved from Tennessee to Tucson, Arizona.  But last I heard, he was in Tucson.  Good Luck with the fingerboard.

Lid Lifter...

You could try the Google phonebook. Go to Google and type...

rphonebook:lennon AZ

That will give you all the residential listings for all of the Lennons in Arizona. There are only 38... three of the are named "Mike Lennon" so one of those might be who you're looking for (or maybe not).

I was very interested in your posting of the guitar that Mike Lennon made that you acquired.  I was a student of his from 1979-1982 taking about 3 different parts of the apprentice shops courses.  He is a great guy,  amazing guitar builder and repairman.  I own 2 of his Spring Hill, Fender solid wood series guitars.  It was a shame that fender bought out guild and stopped producing these incredible guitars.  Good to chat with you,  Timsgtr   http://www.timsguitar.com

i myself haven't. haven't got the money anyway.  my dad on the other hand has bought countless beautiful guitars off ebay, one of them being an absolutely gorgeous cream white falcon.  i've been scammed on little stuff like a dress sized wrong  and a crappy dvd copy i ordered  ( i knew it was copied but i didnt expect it to suck so bad.)  but the guitars have all been great.

So, has anyone "taken the plunge" and purchased a guitar off Ebay?

I have definately taken the internet instrument plunge, but mostly at shopgoodwill. I'm only telling you'all this as long as you don't bid against "Tattoo34" all right?:? Like any other auction, some stuff goes too high, but some stuff slides through and you can steal it. This is especially true if you are handy at cleaning up and tweeking older slightly beat up stuff, or know a good luthier. It's also a real grab bag of different instruments, and I've seen everything from ukes to tubas to guitars to player pianos and everything in between. Here's my current instrument collection, several of which I've gotten from Goodwill http://www.ukeblue.com/myguitars.html

I'm bumping this back up. I've been watching the Goodwill site for a year and a half now...and as of the date of this post, I've never seen such a guitar rich envinronment on there as now. Just click on musical instruments. If anyone is looking for a beat around junker guitar... now's a ripe time, check it out! There is even a few banjos on there right now. BTW, I just got a really sweet Yamaha FG-331 acoustic from Goodwill, came in the mail yesterday...$22:)

heya thanks 1four5 for the link to the Goodwill instruments. The selling prices were a huge suprise! I have seen Goodwill auctions for guitars on Ebay before and could not believe how much they were trying to sell some of that garbage for. This being the same situation in there retail stores. Their own auction site seem to have amazing deals however. You still have to know what you are looking for and there is the inherient risk of getting junk that was not properly described, but at these prices it will probably be worth it. Your Yamaha... a Japnese model?

a good rule of thumb on quality at low price point is this....

70's and 80's = Japanese

90's~2000 + = Korean

2004 > Chinese=  yes they are the new version of what the Korean and Japanese guitars represented in past decades.

of course good old american made quality is always a good measure and if you can afford it why not support economy on a more local level.

Does anyone know of a guitar company in the U.S. that makes guitars here in the U.S. at a sub $500 price range?

I looked at Lunch today, and the Yamaha says made in China on the label. It sure has the appearance of an older 70's model though! Good question on American made guitars. Only one I can think of is the Baby Taylor....which retails in the $350 range. I'm thinking that since Goodwill is all donated junk....all the money goes into great American institution.:) Been playin the Yamaha hard today...sweet sweet, nice sized (concert I believe it's called) guitar!

I have bought more than a few excellent guitars and keyboards off of eBay, and they were in excellent condition. I bought two red Fender Strats, a Jackson Dinky, Roland keyboards, and even a Gibson SG and a Hoffner violin. All of them were great purchases, except for the Hoffner! I ended up winning the violin at 20 dollars, I paid, and the item was never shipped! I was disappointed, but I ended up getting my money back.

God I bought a guitar off ebay and thought it was a pretty good buy until I realised I had to pay import tax on it! Lol came to about 400 pounds which is roughly around 900 dollars (?). It was a BC Rich - Beast which looked cool and sounded cool but was soooooooo annoying to play! The shape made it one of the most uncomforatble guitars I've ever played and the guitar was neck heavy, which I hate...

Anyway I sold it after about 6 months with a profit of 50 pound! Lol - apparently the guy who bought it had just won over 2000 pounds at the horse races or something! :)

I bought my reso off Ebay - from a 'proper' retailer, rather than a private seller, and one with good feedback etc - it was excellent value, but arrived strung incorrectly (which is easy enough to fix, assuming the buyer realises it, of course!). Still, it saved me a few quid, so I ain't complaining.

I think with acoustic guitars, I'd be inclined to buy one from a store rather than online - even if the seller is legit, you still have the hassle of returning it if it's broke!

Dan :)

The Blueridge guitars are quite a bargain I think. But unless you want a laminate model, stay away from TWO numbers and go for three....like the BR180 or 183 instead of an 83, 70, etc. They have laminate back and sides. For the $50-$100 extra you get good solid wood. I got the 160, rosewood and spruce dreadnaught, and the 183, a 000 size for my beater uppers. They sound as good or better than Martins at a fraction of the cost. They go to NYC or anywhere I'd worry.....after being held up at gunpoint and losing a nice guitar once, I carry these, I'll just hand it over and get another.

I bought a Gibson Les Paul that goes for about $3500 new (a Custom Shop Historic 1957 Reissue) for $1800 on Ebay. It had a few scratches, which were documented in the listing, so there were no surprises. It's a great guitar.

My thought was, guitars being produced by a high-end shop should be pretty consistent, so I just played the same model at a guitar store, decided I liked it, then bought a used one on Ebay for 1/2 off.

Still, paying that much for a guitar I hadn't played was terrifying...
