please don't flame at me. i need responses before the weekend is out and no one's been on the beginner forum fo almost a week. i'd just like to hear waht some good beginner tabs are, or what your first song learned was. thanks. kitty

or what your first song learned was 20 something years ago, I got a guitar and a beginner book. The first song I ever learned was "Dream" by the Everly Brothers. Then came Hotel California and American Pie. I didn't last long and gave up the guitar. I recently picked it back up and have gotten into improv blues and making up my own songs. If I'm ever asked where a great place to start on guitar is, I would have to say learn 12 bar blues. It's the most fun the quickest.

Hi Kitty, when I was tired of strumming, many many years ago, I went into fingerpicking world!  The firsts songs I've learned were: If - Pink Floyd The Lee Shore - D. Crosby (without the intro  )Genesis - J. Kaukonen Judy - J. Renbourn (just the 1st section  )Hope this helps. Cheers. AB

Boy! You people all went whole hog on a first tune, didn't you? When I decided to try to learn the guitar, I had an old arch-top that my older brother had tried to play. Since I know how to read music, I had a song book, and painstakingly picked out "Old Chisolm Trail" in the key of C (That was one of the few songs in the book with no sharps or flats). It was a single-note-at-a-time thing, but it got me involved (read: hooked). 'Course, that was way back in the last century 'round 'bout 1957-58.  Keep on pickin'Brad

The first song I learned all the way through I think was "don't think twice " by dylan . I just faked the fingerpicking with my thumb and index finger and I was so proud of myself.the reason I mention this song is that is has a lot of chords ( I was using a book with the little chord diagrams) but I could play all the chords and the song used most of the ones I could play . It was a great thing to practice chord changes and such . 30 years later I still remember how to play it , if only I could remember the song I tried to learn last week ?????

Bob- Not as far as some of us! I remember a lot of Burl Ives stuff. I was in my last years of High School before PP&M got real popular. I even saw them in concert in Fresno in (I think) 61 or 62! (I can also remember hearing Leadbelly on the radio a few times).  Keep on pickin'Brad

First fingerstyle song was "Dust in the Wind" followed by "Blackbird" and "Silent Night". Otherwise I strum almost any chord progression and am working on Carter Style bass melodies.

Probably a bit late now but my first song was Muse - Plug in baby. I just heard my friend playing it and was amazed! Took me ages to get the hang of it though!

My first song, played probably about 10 minutes after I picked up my mom's 1952 Martin 0-18, was the bass line for Marvin Gaye's "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". The most popular first songs I teach my students who are total beginners are "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles and "For What it's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield. The former can be played on the first, second, and third stings only (you can slip a piece of felt or cloth under the bass strings to mute them) using only one finger. "For What it's Worth" can be played with just two chords, E and A, if you simplify the chorus. They've been a great, easy introduction to guitar for about 30 of my students.

The first song I learned how to play all the way through and sing was Baby What You Want Me To Do -- the old Jimmy Reed song. That was about eight years ago. I still like to jam to it on my Strat.

Hi Kitty Don't laugh everyone but I was dating a classical guitar student back in my teens and the first thing I learnt was that first 20 odd bars of CLASSICAL GAS parrot fashion complete with hammer ons, pull ofs the lot. I didn't know a single chord or note just played it monkey see monkey do. About 4 years latter I nicked my younger brothers classical trainer and learnt all the basic chords in the complete Beatles song book and had a lot of fun learning those songs. The first breakthrough came with a Leonard Cohen songbook with tab, those early parrot style lessons and the discipline of thumb and 3 fingers for the right hand really helped and Leonard's clear languid picking patterns have been at the route of so much of what I've learnt and played since. My top tip when starting out is play songs you enjoy hearing, be influenced by what you like, not by what tutorials say play next. Fine take the lesson but practice it on your terms and avoid the god I'm sick of this crappy song factor. Have fun MARK

Probably my first "song" was Yellow Submarine-  I am deeply embarrassed by that, but the week after I redeemed myself with George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord"- he rules in my musical world!
