HA HA

One of my first jobs back in the mid seventies was as the tea boy at Music City on Shaftsbury Avn London

If only I had a pound for every duff begginers version of Stairway to Heaven we had to endure from Jimmy Page wannabees as thay tried out the latest Gibson or Fender on the wall that they had no intention of buying.

It all seems so long ago now but those where the days!

Oh and if anyone wants to start a guitar/wife swap thread !!!

Hear you soon MARK

The first song I learnt was The Horse and the Flea.  I liked it because it had a bit where the 6th string was played sliding from the third fret to the 9th.

The words were :-

A horse and a flea and two blind mice were sitting on a tombstone playing dice

Horsey slipped (slide 3-9)

"Whoops," said the flea, "You're sitting on me."

Boom Boom Ain't it grand to be crazy

Boom Boom Ain't it grand to be crazy.

First banjo pick was Earl's Breakdown.

First guitar pick ( after Sloop John B a la Beachboys)  was Bert Jansche's Angie.

My first song was Die Lorelei, in German.  I learned it, and many other German Folk songs in Germany in the period from 1945 to 1950 when I was there with my Army family.  I was about 10 years old, and played a Banjo-Uke.

That is not to say that I never knew or sang other songs prior.  But that was the first one I learned to play an instrument with.

Played that puppy until about 1952 or there about, when I was gifted my first guitar.

Played a semi-fingerpicking frailing banjo style at that time.  Funny, I never used a pick, and until last week never thought about trying to learn how.  But since I  re-strung my 12 string gitfiddle I have been trying to learn.

Man, that's harder than fingerpickin'!

My first song was Neil Youngs "Heart of Gold" and then "Cinnamon Girl". He has many others that are fun to play.

As I recall, my first song was "the Sloop John B" or "John B Sails". Can't even remember why or how I learned it, but I was only 9 or 10 at the time.

As silly as this might sound... when I was 8, the first song I learned was the Super Mario Bros' theme song. I think I got about it by fooling around and eventually connecting the "discoveries" together.

First song I attempted to learn? "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Peter, Paul & Mary was my first fingerpicking song. At the time, I did understand the drug association with the song; now I do, but it is rather stupid to think of it that way.

Was Puff the Magic Dragon a drug song??  I must have missed something.  We had a verse for the end of it...

Now Puff the Magic Dragon lives on the shelf

And nobody will play with Puff, so Puff plays with himself.

Yerp.  I certainly missed something.

It is really a song about childhood and the loss of one's childhood. However, during the 60s and 70s, it got associated with marijuana. Apperently, when Jack got high... I don't think I have to explain.

It is one of those songs that get misinterpreted.
